POWDER WEDGE

Watched a redneck show last week or so and they were trying to split rails with a powder wedge. Completely splintered the whole end of the log. Not a usable fence rail in the whole thing.

Google powder wedge and it turns a few hits. Also check ebay.

We had one laying around the homestead. Never saw it used. It would be easy to make one if you had a picture.

My gt.gt. uncle Nip had one when was a kid in high school put cannon powder in it drive it into a large log use a backup log so you don't have go chance it. Use a 2 in fuse light and hit the deck. Would split those logs real nice. Make one from a car axle it will hold up better lots of fun I made one in high school machine shop. Try that today.

About 1 in. By 12 in. Boar out a 3/4 hole a little over 3/4 of he way down then drill a 1/4 in hole for the fuse at the end of the hole use slow burning dynamite fuse. And canon black power not gun powder burns to fast.

Ps good luck

They show up on ebay. But lot of people don't know what they are so sometimes the descriptions can say anything. be more creative with your searches.

The way to do it is to take a chainsaw, and stick the nose into the log, near the bottom of the log, on the side of the log. You want to excavate a pocket, bigger at the base of the pocket, than at the top. You really don't need a lot of powder, but you want a fast burning powder, relatively fine grade. I have seen Hercules Bulls eye powder, and black powder fffg used for this. You put the powder into a tinfoil packet, and slide a cannon fuse into it. Then you slide the flat packet into the pocket you excavated with the chainsaw. You hammer in a a tapered wooden wedge in being sure not to mash up the foil packet, or the fuse. The only reason for the foil is to keep the powder from getting wet. As it says on the firecracker package, light fuse, and walk away. Properly done, the log moves little more than apart. don't be a jacka ss and end up on youtube!

I like to put one up that pops all the splinters out. Probably should make a video next time. Takes 10 pounds of 34-0-0, fuel oil,and home made cap and fuse. Nice hole for new basement.
