Ok - what the heck IS it?

I know somebody on this board can answer this - it's probably easy.

What IS this thing? My buddy bought a 47 ford truck, and this came in a box of "extra parts" so I'm only assuming it's auto related - certainly looks it.

It's marked Echlin C55 6 Volt. Google gives me nothing.

I had a few theories - at fist I thought some kind of motor, but I don't think it is.

The small knurled knob on the rounded end (fuzzy picture) as a through hole, but the knob itself seems to fill nothing but a blind hole. But I can't be sure.

So I started thinking that perhaps its some kind of old style of ignition coil. Maybe the knurled knob would hold the primary wire?

What really threw me though is when I unscrewed the finned metal cap - it's got a lightbulb in it! Under that solid metal cap.

... ???

I'm still leaning towards ignition coil as a wild guess, and maybe the bulb either warms it up for some reason - or acts as a resistor ???

Problem is, if it IS an ignition coil, I can't imagine I've made it this far in life without ever seeing one.

Anybody?

bulbs can be used for voltage drop or for mild voltage regulation.. and with a cover over it..

so its probably incidentail to its main purpose.. the bottom end looks like its set up for high voltage and the top for low voltage coil connections.. so I think its a coil.

I remember those too - I know exactly what you're talking about - but that finned cap that looks like it would ride on a tire is threaded on - with a lightbulb under it.

The bulb is totally sealed by the metal cap - so the bulb doesn't light anything up.

And nothing on the part spins. It's all solid.

Its a coil that was originally used on a cord. If the coil burned out you could use a tail light bulb to get on your way.

Found it on EBay they $70 for it.

Lightning arrestor for an ETD, it was mounted on the highest point of the main frame of the ETD to attract lightning and discharge it to the electrical system for the backup power source. The light bulb let the operator know it was working when the cap was removed, but should be kept on because the brightness of the flash resulted in blindness to the operator.

Hey JR.
Next time you take close up pictures, if your camera has a dial on it with a Macro setting or the picture of the little flower, change to that and your close ups will be in focus.

I'll be damned - I searched ebay myself and never found it.

That's definitely it.

This one's in much better shape than theirs.

Anybody want to buy a used Echlin 6v coil. They're super rare and valuable.

:)

hat?! You expect Jose & Hammeed to read English?!!

What about little Johnny who just can't read?

Proof of concept!!!!! There is a coil with an internal resistor Very interesting, We can no longer claim otherwise. Jim
