2005 Caravan ABS question

I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan that has 152k miles on it. Yesterday while going down the highway my wife said the ABS and Traction control Off lights came on and will not go off. The fluid is up to level, the brake pads look fine, the brake pedal feels fine(not hard or spongy), and everything works fine except the ABS and Trac Control. The only problem we have had with this van was the EGR valve at about 50k miles. Any idea what the problem could be? My wife added brake fluid to it because it wasn't running out of the cap, so I don't know how low it really was. The owners manual says that if the traction control is used heavily it will automatically kick out and cool off for a 4 minute time period, however she wasn't working the traction control at this time so probably not an issue. Thanks

Sounds like one of your ABS wheel sensors or wire leading to it is bad. It would be on the drive axle since traction control lite is on too. Most likely your van is front wheel drive and the wires go bad leading to the ABS sensor because the wires are always flexing from turning.

If it's not either of those look to see if the tone ring is rusted on the rotors. This was a chronic problem on IH built school buses. They finally went to a stainless tone ring. The tone ring is what the ABS sensor picks up it's signal from. If the tone ring rusts the signal is interrupted or non existant.

Or the seneor itself may be loaded up with dirt or rust and filinfs. Some sensors can be removed form hubs and cleaned... My cars have a permantly attached sensor and have to replace along with new $250 wheel bearing.

My old 94 Caravan air bag light comes on when ever it blows the rear wiper fuse. New fuse, light goes out. Some studying of the electrical diagram and I found out they were related. At first I didn't know what was going on as I thought it might be for the brake system. So many abbreviations now days hard to keep them straight.

Likely a wheel sensor.
Best way to diagnose is with an ABS code reader. The reader will tell you on which wheel the sensor is inoperative. On the '05, the rear tone rings are sealed inside a plastic housing on the back side with the sensor clipped to the housing. The front are exposed to the elements.
Cleaning works occasionally - but is usually a faulty part.
Sensors are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace - If you get it right the first time.

If you're setting codes, this probably isn't your problem, but another hard to diagnose problem to look for on these caravans is that you can get corrosion on the underside your fusebox (Integrated Power Module) located in the engine compartment. There are very small multiple pins that the electrical connectors attach to. These pins corrode off internally and you will have electrical component failures. I lost my ABS, horn and air bag through this process. You have to remove the circuit board on the IPM to verify this usually. Replacement is the easiest fix.

You said your wife added brake fluid, check the float in the master cyl, if it was low enough to trip the light, it may be stuck down and needs a nudge to float again. And if that is the problem, you need to find out where the brake fluid went.

Check if a fuse is blown an if so might be trailer hitch wire coroded an shorting from salt. Asuming your car might have trailer hitch. Very important that abs works correctly!

Thanks guys. I pulled the wheels and tried cleaning the fronts, and will try some of the other stuff tomorrow. I sure like old tractors without ABS !
