Brake-Shift selector interlock

The interlock on my '04 explorer is not working all the time. Having difficulty getting it into and out of park sometimes. I thought that it was cable operated but I could not find a cable. What operates it and what can be done to fix it?

I think it is accuated by the brake light current draw when you press the brake pedal, thus it is more than likely electrically controlled. Tom

Operated by your brake light switch assembly. It
activates a solenoid with a plunger to lock/unlock
shifter down on the steering column.

First check to see if your brake lightsare functioning. Then check brake light switch. see if it isproperky positioned and working.

Any idea how far down the solenoid is?

Showcrop I do not remember the solenoid's location on the steering column.
It's been quite a few years since I had one apart.
But like the others have said make sure your brake lights are working.

One other thing I just thought of that will keep it from shifting out of park is if the engine RPM is too high. The computer senses this and won't let you take it out of park.

I'm not familiar with that one specifically... but a GM we have on the fire department was actuated by solenoid, powered by the brake light switch. So check first to see if the brake lights are working. If they're not... check for power to the brake light switch... and if it's got power... check for power out of the switch with the brakes applied.
A new switch fixed the GM...
I forget now if the switch was near the pedal or hydraulically activated... so you might want to look around a bit.

Thanks everyone for responses. As I was driving up through Maine today, a stones throw from New Brunswick, I realized that I have also noticed recently that the cruise doesn't always disengage on the first touch of the brake pedal. Last night I saw that the brake lights don't always come on, so I believer that I have it isolated to the brake light switch.
