they just told me the dash has to be pulled on my crown vic to change the heater core ,, it is currently quik fixed with d-i-k-e,i want to make sure it stays fixed ,, it is such a nice car .hate to have to trade it ..i cant beleive they built the car around the heater core making it nearly impossible to repair ,, ,, anyone ever worked this problem , and have any ideas ? thanx jim

I had the same problem with my '71 Thuderbird. Four - five times more labor than parts to fix, so I just traded it for a newer vehicle.

I put a heater core in a 90 Crown Vic. Its an ugly job the dash board had to come back and up. I bought a book for it. The thing had all different kinds of fastners and places to hide them.

I stopped at a shop three weeks ago, and he had ALL of the dash out,Jeep heater core.

I have a 1981 Mercury Cougar. It's the same setup on it. You have to pull the dash. I had it replaced about 20 years ago at a Mercury dealer. It wasn't cheap then. I change the antifreeze every other year. Being permanent doesn't mean forever. I think it loses it's rust inhibitor. Hal

i think there is leaked antifreeze trapped in the duct somewhere ,i detect a odor with windows up and heater on , i dont think it is leaking now...

I think many makes are like that now. They start with the heater core and build the car around it. I worked at a dealership from '93 to '03 and they were like that then. I have seen techs do it in much less than the 8hrs. I know repair is expensive, but then when you consider the payments for the next five or six years, it doesn't seem that bad. AND if they have any idea what it needs, they won't allow you anything for it.
