1948 A john deere

I bought a 1948 A john deere n 612029 went to,pick it up noticed it had a DLTX DUPLEX carb, and waterpump. E compared it to my friends 48 sn607150 was standard production. Mine was newer so figured they must have nade model change in mid year. Checked with JD dealer to see when they changed "said never have never will" Tractor runs good and sounds good. I have worked on modle 60 with duplex so question is. what all did they have to change to convert, so I know what to expect down the road? Head and manafold looks like 60, but cant tell about the engin block. THANKS

Sooo did they notch your frame rails to make that 60 head fit? I think the exhaust ports on the top of the head usually contact the frame on the late A with the pressed steel frame.

As has already been mentioned, the frame has to be notched to fit the head. That is probably the hardest part of the swap. A 60 throttle linkage would probably work, and the stock choke rod may or may not work. The flange on the exhaust pipe would have to be cut off and rewelded on at the proper angle. The engine block has to be the block for your tractor, as a 60 block will not bolt to your crankcase. Your engine block is the same length as a 60 block, so the the A pushrods and rocker arms will work (but the 60 stuff is the same). The 60 head will raise the compression slightly over the stock head for your tractor, but not a huge amount.

Thanks a bunch guys. Right on the frame has been cut and they cut the flange off an old exhost and slid it down the pipe as loose flange the controls are almost the same as the 60 I told the club members I would just put 2 model stickers on A/60. It runs pretty good and I am just going to fix it up and use it for a parade unit and drive it on tractor drives it will be one of a kind at the club tractor show. there is a young lad that has one of the same year here in town so will be good opportunity to mentor and bond he is only 59 years younger than I am.
