Work This Week

Moved equipment on job this Monday and have been sick ever since. Doctor said bacterial bronchitis. Took down the drive thru before I left Mon. My brother had a crew there all week salvaging different things as there is an article being done on the job. Still have not found anyone interested in the vault door. Building is only 5 years old. I know you will find this hard to believe but before we took possession of the job someone came there and evacuated the outside part of the air conditioning system, carefully disassembled it, removed and recycled the metal. I know, and I don't know Who to thank.

Appears to have been a branch bank.

5 years is not very old, did branch go the way of merger/consolidation and found they had a sister branch within 3-4 blocks? A while back it seemed like that was happening every 6 months around here.

In these parts it is kind of unusual to find a piece of real estate that is worth enough to justify the demo expense on something like this to "re-purpose" the site. There are some high traffic corners, but most of them have been picked up and developed already.

I sense the tongue firmly planted in cheek regarding the AC unit. My assumption is that you would have built any evac. costs into your contract so mostly no harm no foul.

Do you have much of a market for salvaged materials? The "Green Building/LEED" system gives big points for recycled materials. I don"t see much of that kind of work in the markets I serve. My impression is that it is mostly driven by government projects, although I am familiar with a few private projects by organizations I respect that were also LEED certified. Not sure the economics actually worked, but good will and visibility still count for something.

RBnSC,

Wondered why you never posted demo pics. Get well soon. Lotsa rest, lotsa water.

Incredible that it will be torn down. Seems like it could be used for all sorts of office space or a small specialty store or restaurant. Wow, we are a worse throw-away society than I even imagined!

Sweet Feet, I agree - have seen a number of buildings that seem still viable, with minor remodeling - being torn down, trashed. Apparently the land is more valuable empty. LOCATION, location, location.

What would you value at or sell the vault door for? I'm curious & not curious, if that makes sense.

In my area it's not uncommon for a building to be demo'd shortly after being vacated. High real estate taxes are the main reason that happens here. Other factors are the lousy real estate market, and high cost to remodel a commercial building for a different use.
They just tore down a building that had originally been a new car dealership in the 1960's, and most recently was a clothing store. It was a 2 story building. In it's place a 2 story building that appears to be close to the same size is now going up. Another that comes to mind is a 1950's-'60's era factory that closed because of labor costs. It was quickly torn down.
It's also not unusual for colleges to buy up surrounding houses and buildings and demo them.

Thank You SweetFeet I am trying. Was planning to go back to work yesterday but had a bad night and it was below freezing out side and thought it better to wait till Monday. To answer several questions this is part of a very large project. This building was near the entrance of the development. The vault door I don't know what it is worth. I will have to demolish the building around it to even take pictures.

My former neighbor did demolition and sold a fault door from a bank for about $500, I think? It was very heavy and when the buyer was moving it into his basement, broke the stairs.

It's hard for us old timers to accept the fact that a building can be deemed obsolete as soon as it is finished. I don't know how they do it, but someone, somewhere, has some money. Read in local paper the other day this very large building that began life as a steak house, then became an oriental diner, was being demolished. And what is going to be built on the site? Just another MickeyD's.
