OT-Why I like my tractors better each day

Recent article/ad in the local paper's auto section about the new Ford Fusion:
70 on board computers
145 actuators
4,716 signals
74 sensors
My first reaction was "Gee... what could possibly go wrong"?
Not picking on Fords... just a sign of the times I guess.
Sure makes maintaining these old tractors seem much easier.

I used to work at a dealership, and the Lincoln Town Cars in particular, had so many electronic devices and controls that you raised the trunk lid and pulled the cover off from behind the rear seat, there was a panel there almost as large as the seat back with electronic controls and switches, etc. A technicians nightmare.

I got a similar story on my 09 F150. I don't even try to change my own oil any more on vehicles. I've heard new farm tractors are getting to be just as bad. That's why we won't be talking and collecting today's stuff 60-80 years from now as none of it will be serviceable.I'd bet my H and M will still be running then.

one of the reasons i keep my old vehicles, most of my usin trucks are so old there becoming popular again, nothing wrong with them except bad gas mileage, but there is more to life than gas mileage, they usually dont break down but if they do you check for fuel, if no fuel, you change the filter, if no spark, you switch the ignition module, it will be one of those things, there simply isnt any other things lol

I have an industrial JD backhoe. If you do something wrong like press the forward and reverse pedal at the same time, It lights a picture of the owners manual on the interment panel. I shudder to think what happens when the electronics goes out. Junk yard I imagine.

The Deere 80 series, like sold in 1995-99 had seven computers behind cab. You were not supposed to blow them off with compressed air as it could create enough static electricity to damage them. Many cars and tractors, you are supposed to discharge yourself before touching the electronic components. My cordless phone will go crazy if I pick it up without discharging myself.

Quoted... "My first reaction was "Gee... what could possibly go wrong"?

All its takes is ONE wire to chaffe or get cut and your vehicle is not moving. With thousands of wires, sooner or later it WILL happen.

Every new vehicle is like this, so it really dont matter. Give me a carb, HEI distributor, and a 10SI alternator and I am happy.

I heard that a LOT when the IH 88 series came out back in 1982. There are sure a lot of them still out there for something that wouldn't last, and they're pretty collectable.

I heard it again when the first generation CaseIH Magnums came out in 1987. "Them d**n things are all computers. They won't be any of 'em around in 20 years." We're at 25 years and many of them are still going strong, and bringing good money when they come up for sale.

Looks like they built 'em a lot better than people thought.
