Today was a good and bad day all rolled into one!!!

Today was the first time both of my older two grand children have been home together with me in over ten years. They both have been serving on active duty in the Army. Different countries and continents

My Grand Daughter has been in the Army now for ten years. She is a master sergeant. I am proud as Heck of her. She did not like school very much and just got fair to average grades. She just did not like the high school experience. She did not even think of going to college. So she joined the Army right out of high school. She really loves Army life. She has done very well for herself. She is currently stationed in Germany. She is home for an extended leave. She has been home for two weeks now. This is the longest that she has been home since she joined the Army.

My grand son is home for just ten more days. His unit just rotated out of Afghanistan three weeks ago. He was over there for over a year this time. He went right back after he passed all his physicals after being wounded. He is a West Point grad and currently has the rank of Captain. If he extends his enlistment he will get promoted to Major. He has been on active duty almost six years now. He has been in Afghanistan for over three years of that time.

So they came over several night ago and just ate supper with me an traded old Army stories. A lot of the things have not changed that much. While they where here that night they heard me talking to my sons about needing to run some of the cattle through the chute to update shots and implants. So both of them volunteered to help me do that today.

At a little after 9:00 am we got everything set up to start working the cattle. We had to work several different groups including all the stock cows. The fall calving cows needed their calves done as well. So we had a full day of work. The Sun was out and we where protected from the wind where we where working so it was not to bad weather wise. So when we got done at 4:30 we had ran 295 head through the chute for the day. Pretty good day for two young people and an old man. LOL It was great working with them today. It really brought back some memories. The two of them just about lived here when they where younger. It will be one of those days we will cherish in our memories.

The great part was just working and talking with them all day. I love to hear how they are thinking and looking at the things that are happening around them.

They stayed for supper. After it was over they both wanted to talk to me privately. (this is the sad/bad part) It seems that they have both been communicating back and forth the last six months. Neither of them like what they see happening to the armed forces of this great country. My grand son just flat out told me he is tired of writing to families of service men that die because of STUPID rules of engagement that are written by politicians in DC that have ZERO military knowledge. My grand daughter works with the families of wounded soldiers in Germany. She says she just can't take doing that any more. There are too many ruined lives/families. She says there is no clear goal anymore. So they both think that the men/women are dieing for no good reason. So they both wanted to tell me face to face that neither of them is extending their enlistments. These are two people that have dedicated the last 9-10 years of their lives to the US Army. She is the type of enlisted person that goes for the life time of service. Her type makes the Army WORK. It is the sergeants that make things happen smoothly. My grand son is the kind of man that we need leading the men who fight for us. He has been wounded. (nine AK 47 bullet holes in his body) He has been where he feared for his life and over come the odds to complete his mission. He knows what he is asking the men under him to risk. He has the smarts and training to be a good leader.

I am humbled by the fact that they both respected me enough to want to tell me first and in person how they felt. They both where worried about what I would think about their decision. They both hate to be leaving their chosen careers but they both do not think that they will be able to stand to see the great institution caused damage by the DC crowd. They both say it is already happening.

I am really upset by this. I HATE the fact that these two young people are having their dreams smashed by fools. Do you really think my Grand son went through West Point, Air borne training and then Ranger training to just quit as soon as his required time was up???? He could have had a medical discharge when he was wounded but he busted his butt to get back to where he could stay in.

MY Grand Daughter is scared to death about what kind of job she can find in the civilian job market. She has a very respected position in the Army. She does not know if her skills will enable her to find a good job. Remember how everyone thinks you need a college degree to KNOW anything these days.

My grand son has a better civilian future. He already has six figure job offers. It seems that the civilian job market places a high value on his training and leadership skills. (he did graduate in the top 10% of his class at West Point. That is a hard thing to do)

I am at a loss on how to help them deal with this major change in their careers. I am so mad at people that I will not name here. I DO not want this post Poofed!!!

These are the people we need to protect us. What kind of people are going to be left when more of this goes on. My Grand Son says most of the close friends he made at West Point feel as he does. Few of them are extending their enlistments after the required time is up.

Mainly ranting at the world that I can't change. I am rapidly becoming more cynical about this country's future.

That is a real shame that they spent all that time training for something they felt so strongly in doing for a career, then because of the stupidity of higher powers are stepping down. Please thank them for what they have done for all of us and the others they have helped. I hope all works out for them with whatever they choose to pursue now. Scott

Yep son signed up for 6 years in the navy as a seabee and after 3 years got external_link down sized. Never heard of being booted out of the service till now for other then very bad reasons be he was. But he was not the only one as there where a number of Battalions that got flat out cut out as in no more of them

I will never understand "rules of engagement". If you need to go to war win the D-mm thing and go home. You tell the local people to leave or point out the bad guys, then shoot. No party s just the way I feel.

Well you do know the Geneva Convention say you are to shoot ammo to wound not to kill so the full metal jacket ammo is used so it will go in and out but not open up a large hole on the way out. War is not going in and killing but to remove a many players form the field as you can. It is said to wound one you remove 3 from the field due to the fact it takes 2 people to take the wounded person to help

My son joined the ARMY right out of HS. He wanted to put in 30 yrs. He got out after 20 for the very same reasons. Didn't we learn ANYTHING from Viet Nam ??? Well, he is back in Afganistan working for a military contractor making big bucks. I guess they did him a favor.

Very Sad and Sorry for what the military has to put up with these days. I have almost stopped watching the news, When our so-called leaders show their faces on TV, it makes me sick.

Give those young people a Big Thank You From this old veteran. Thank you for the story J.D, Seller. I always like your posts!!

J. D. I feel your pain, same thing happened in our family. Step son 15 yrs in and called it quits for the same reasons. The whole DC crowd are a bunch of greedy bought off heartless sissies that make me want to puke! Step son is having a real time of it finding a decent job, I do not get it he is well manered and kind and has that military sterness to him.

JD I think your grandchildren are very brave and very wise. I honor their service and dedication to our country. I also share all of the concerns listed here. Our society and country are on a fast track straight to hell and I fear it's too late to stop the train.

JD sad to say when I first enlisted in 74 I didn't think much about the politicians in DC. By the time I retired in 96 I had figured out that most of the brass I could trust but I had no faith in our politicians to use us wisely.

Old, you missed out on the draw down in the 90's. They called it the peace dividend. The active Army went from about 800,000 first to 450,000 then to 400,000. There were guys with 10-15 years of service that got a letter of reprimand when they were privates that got cut cause of that or maybe didn't get promoted quite fast enough. It was crazy. Once they got rid of anyone they had the least little thing on they started a buy out paying long term soldiers to get out. During the same time frame my BIL, US Navy got discharge because the Navy did away with his rating and made no offer to retrain into another job. The problem is that our politicians would rather buy votes with "entitlement" programs and imagration reform than support a strong military.

There have been hundreds of RIF (reductions in force) programs way back to the 70's. In every one they started with the seamen they needed the least. Either by rate, rating or performance. You know , those nasty semi annual performance ratings (Evals).
Be honest and evaluate where your son was.
Did you earn your Dolphins in those boomers?

Hey there;
I enlisted in 1954 I was qualified for OCS (Officers Candidate School) before I left town. After Basic training I went to Ft. Benning, The course was 21 weeks long, I went through 20 weeks. Had my uniform ordered, passed all security check etc.. Then I started having nightmares, about my buddies coming up out of their graves. In OCS we had to write letters to the next of kin, of the men killed by our wrong decisions.I know it was imaginary but, I guess I was weak for not being able to send men out to die, I can somewhat understand their feelings. I requested dissmissel from the course.
I ------ my instructors off, for being "chicken", but I can sleep at night.

I know how your grandkids feel. Want to think them for their service. I have a son in the same position. Been over seas twice and going on nine years. As soon as he can find a good paying job he is out of the army. Likes the job he has now, but don't like what he sees ahead.

Gordo, I read in the news that the Navy had cut most of the SeaBees. Evals had nothing to do with it. Basically they did here the same thing they did to my BIL. Job went away, gotta downsize just after the 1st Gulf war, just send em home without offering to retrain into another job and letting them stay in. Heck long before I retired the Army went to "retention contol points"(RCP). That translates into you have to make a certain rank by a certain time to be retained on active duty. When I first joined a guy could retire as an E5 as long as he was on the promotion list for E6. By the time I retired you had to be an E6 to go past 15 years.

I know the Navy was talking about draw downs a couple of years ago when my son finished his enlistment. He opted to get out and go Army NG so he could go to school but told me about up coming RIFS then.

The "police actions" are getting us nowhere. We either need to fight wars to win or stay home and try to protect our own country from the invaders.

I think most people understand that politicians are messing up everything.

I remember seeing a cartoon once in the Wizard of IZ. Basically it said that that when the chickens went on a "no-egg strike", he ordered all of the cows de-horned. That's about as close to reality that any politician gets.

It"s really a shame. I thank them for their service. We the people know that if they were cut loose and the rules of engagement were left to the commanders in the field, this thing would have been cleaned up before now.
We have the best military in the world, and it will survive this administration.

Thanks for telling us about this. To add to your grandkids' woes, now our bureauacracy is going to drastically cut our military budget. Our "chiefs" should lead the charge like native American chiefs did.

My son was in the Navy for 4 yrs.,he couldn't wait to get back home, the waste, mismanagement, and political games spoiled what he thought might be a career. On a positive note, he's now in college and helping to run the family business.

Sorry to here of the loss for this country. I have a friend that son just come back from afgan/iraq .He had the same stories that your grand kids have with the general disgust for the way things are over there. He told them to pound off for reenlistment . I would think there dear old grand pa would be proud to have one tough grand daughter working beside him till she figures things out. I wish your family the best and Steve's too. Trucker.

I have to wonder if the military discourages "getting out" by making them think they won't find a good job?
My son in law was in the Air Force for 8 years in the 90s. Went in with one year of college. He was scared to death to get out,but was tired of sleeping in the sand every time Clinton needed a diversion.
Long story short,he was a hydraulics specialist on fighter jets, within two weeks of getting out he had a job working on presses in an auto parts factory, after just 12 years,he is plant manager with a company car and a salary that would blow you away. Never even went back and got any more education. Just worked his way up from $12 an hour to start.

Maybe they should start running for office. It sounds as though these are the people we need running this once great nation. Start local and when they get to the state level, I'll vote for them.

Nate

It's sickening that those brave young men and women are used as pawns in Washington's retarded bureaucratic games. Please thank them for their service and sacrifice for me.

Your granddaughter will do well because there is tremendous demand for people with a work ethic particularly with some technical background.

Soldiers are by their very definition are expendable, even the good ones like your grandkids, and especially to a government that doesn't like soldiers anyway.

Please thank them for serving us and US. The ludicrousness reminds me of Nam...I"m sure having a Christmas Truce (now would be a holiday truce) as a goodwill gesture meant an awful lot to heathens. Great opportunity to resupply without resistance. And remember the Paris Peace Talks? Arguing endlessly about the shape of the table they would negotiate at. Or now, announcing to the enemy when you"re going to leave.......just wait it out. Used to be, the US left when the job was done.

Back in 79, I saw enough E5s to E7s leaving the service because they did not like the changes, that I did not re-enlist. So what they are seeing and feeling has been going on for a long time.
SDE

I'm late to the discussion and not much to add to what's already been said, except to opine that granddaughter probably need not worry too much about finding work on the outside. Anyone who make E-8 in 10 years is a pretty remarkable individual. Thanks to both for their service, and I wish them well.

I, too, mourn for the republic. . .
