AMEN to that, really nice. Its a shame that so many back in the day or in this day do not understand what the Veterans went thru. Thanks for sharing. Scott

old,

I like it a lot. Hope you don't mind...I saved it to show our son. He is enlisted and will be shipping out to the US Marine Corps a couple weeks after graduation. Only a few short months away - now my eyes are wet. Darn it.

Thanks for posting it.

Shoot I do not mind matter of fact I hope people pass it on. By the way being a former Navy man to me he is what we called Navy Bell hoops . One of those Navy/Marine things

Old, You do remember the response when one of you swabbies said that to a Marine don"t you?

The last Belle I hopped was your ......!

Yeah. The Marine Corps is a department of the Navy--the Men's Department.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that.

Should have added, I don't envy sailors some of their duty.

I once rode an LST from Japan to Taiwan, and ran into a sailor that I had been in grade school with. He was a crewman on the LST. I certainly didn't envy him THAT duty. I was just a temporary passenger, he was stuck on it for a couple of years.

I once heard an LST has four speeds, idle, cruise, fast, and combat, all around 12 knots. Can't argue with that.

I like the original posting. After serving on tanks from 74-96 I think it pretty much sums things up pretty well.

While a tactics instructor at Ft Knox I had the dubious distinction of having worked with a few Marines. One, SSG Davis, Told me that Marine stands for..... Muscles Are Required Intelligence Not Expected. He also told me that you were not allowed to call them Jar Heads any longer because you can put something in a jar.......

I really admire all of our young people today who are serving, picking up for us old pharts where we left off.

Rick

99% of them when I sat that just laugh and yes I have said that to a good number of them one just the other day in Orchelens as a matter of fact we then stood there and talked for a good 15 minutes all the while his wife was just rolling her eyes like ah come on lets go

Of course we had a few other terms for them. Knew of a marine on thee JFK that was on guard duty and he shot an enemy 55 gal drum of oil. Boy did he get in trouble as in brig time. He believed he saw the 55 gal drum moving so he opened up on it with an M-16 during a nuclear weapons handling drill
