1993 4960 John Deere Tractor Sells For $114,000

lol i guess it all depends on how bad 2 rich idiots want something, kind of like a 4.2 million dallar batmobile, while a zr1 camaro auctioned off for a wounded soldiers help organazation only bought a hundred something grand, kind of tells you everything you need to know dont it

I bet they did look/have an 8000 series, that's why they bought the 49. The 4960 was the last good Deere built in my book. I worked for a deere dealership and did alot of repair/calibration on the 8000 series trans. Service manager came and asked my what was wrong, I said the 8000 shifted terrible, he drove it and said thats the way they are. I was new to the tractor when I started and wasn't impressed. chris

There's one born every minute. Reminds me af an auction near here 10-12 years ago where a 4240 brought $35,000. I bought a 4040 brand new for $22,900. I was talking to another guy at the sale who said he bought his 4440 new for $28,000.

Two things happening to drive these prices.

The current dollar isn't worth what it was then.

The current tractors aren't what they built in the Mid to late 80's, they may have more modern conveniences, but people are afraid of them when it comes to durability and parts support(computers to run everything). The 1980s were the pinnacle of the "dumb" tractor.

High incomes lead to crazy outcomes. I don't begrudge farmers the high grain prices because Lord knows they've gone through plenty of hard times (down side for me, I purchase my feed so my costs are up). When you have a pocket full of cash I guess you don't care what it costs if it's something you want.

That leads me to something I was thinking about recently. When was the most progress made in tractor technology, relatively speaking? If you compair in say,30 year increments, think about how they changed from 1930 to 1960. Not even the same machine. Capabilities changed, just the whole general use of them changed, from some lumbering beast that ran on kerosene and was just used for belt work and tillage to what they had become by 1960.
Now compare a tractor built in 1982 to one built in 2012. My 82 has an air conditioned cab,AM-FM radio with cassette, digital tach, speedometer, dual PTO tach,3pt hitch,turbo....pretty much everything the one 30 years newer would have except the computer.
Just something to ponder.

My other comment got poofed so I will try this- In 1993 that 4960 cost roughly $85000-Corn was $2.20/bu in Jan-Feb-So it took 38636 bu to buy that tractor new in 1993. It sold for $114000 at the farm sale-Corn is $7.25/bu now so it took 15746 bu to buy that 20 year old tractor-we were happy with 150 bu corn in 93--now if we don't get 200 we are disapointed. So it took the corn off of 257 Acres to buy that 4960 in 93, today it took the corn off of 79 Acres to buy it---CHEAP TRACTOR!!!!!!!!

That 49 will probably go another 12000 hrs without any major repairs other than routine maintenance and tires if taken care of. Doubtful if a new Deere will make the 15000 hr mark without having half of the electrical system, sensors, computer, emission equipment and probably the trans replaced. None of which can be done by the owner, all Dealer work at $100+hr.Not to mention the new Deere to replace it would probably be on the high side of $200,000
