Roy - here's some pics of the Mary's River covered bridge in Randolph County, Illinois. I took these pictures today, and you have my permission to use them in any way you choose. If you want me to e-mail them to you, let me know.

That's kinda funny. We have a covered bridge in our county also, RANDOLPH COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA! Those are some great photos, did you take them? I have never seen construction like that, with the rainbow supports inside.

That's some interesting engineering there. I was wondering how they managed such a long unsupported span, but the rainbow bracing helps explain it.

Yeah, I took them today. If anybody wants to use them, feel free! The place is under protective construction, and here's another pic with more history info.

Amazing!! Nearly 160 years old. It is remarkable that no flood has taken it out during that time, but it appears that they were smart enough back then to build it "high and dry".

Yeah John, it is amazing that it hasn't been floated out in all those years. The siding extends down below all of the interior framework, and I always think of how much pressure would be on it if the water got up to that elevation. The road that went thru the bridge, in the old days, was a toll road, and they describe it as a "plank road".

The reason they covered bridges like that. They felt it was cheaper to shingle a roof, than repair the bridge structure. Beams and planks.
