OT: Weather moron

Our local news just did a feature on the bitter cold we're having here in mid Mich, single digit temps to zero. The report was how the MDOT Hwy dept puts down salt but it will not work below 20 degrees. They report that the hwy dept. adds a "special" thing called "Calcium Chloride" to the salt to help it melt ice. The reporter goes on to say how no one has CaCl around home so you should just use hot water! Yah right! What an idiot! Dump some water on the sidewalk in zero temps and see how far that gets yah. Talk about a recipe for a busted rear! None of them are smart enough to report that most or all pelleted ice melters sold in stores is calciul chloride! Great research and reporting. So, whatever you do, if you see an icy walk, help out by dumping some hot water on it!

Also see what happens when you dump HOT water on a FROZEN windshield. Replacing windshields gets to be expensive, I know, I learned the hard way.

What's happened to journalizm any more????? Sheez.

Females need to be bubbly, and males need to be able to make silly quips that pass as humor, no one need know or research anything any more in that field....

I spilled hot water on the concrete floor in the wash stall in the horse barn tonight, brought a pail of water to one of the horses stalls, when I came back the hot water was froze on the floor,!!!!

As far as I know hot water freezes every bit as fast as cold water. Correct me if I am wrong... but I think if you leave a bucket of boiling water and a bucket of tap water out in freezing temps they will both freeze at the same time????????
Don't know where I heard that(maybe in the pub where you hear all sorts of stuff!)

My dad always poured warm water on his windshields to get the ice off and I still do it today so that's over 40 years without a broken windshield. The trick is to use luke warm water and pour it on very slow so when it hits the ice heat transfers out of the water quickly but yet it's warm enough to melt the ice. You can use cold water too. Besides what's the difference between water on the windshield and the rear window defroster that heats up immediately. All you need is one degree above freezing.

Take a cup of hot (like coffee pot hot) water out in this weather and throw it in the air. It will all vaporize and never hit the ground. Fun to show the kids too.

Pour the hot water. Slip and fall. Then sue the TV station !! Just dont break anything too important. ;-)

Freezing is the process of removing heat. Hotter water more heat and it takes longer to freeze than cold water. Thermometer measures heat present not cold.

Hot water freezes faster, look here...

Wow, that'd be funny if it wasn't so moronic. I've also noticed the "special reports" on the cold weather. Telling people to wear gloves, put your hat on, etc. Duh! I can just imagine the stupid meetings they have, deciding what to say on these reports. It's not like this is the FIRST TIME it's ever happened!! All in the name of ratings.

I thought the real kicker was the "mystery" surrounding this "strange subtance called calcium chloride". That no regular person can get only municipalities.

(quoted from post at 17:33:11 01/23/13) As far as I know hot water freezes every bit as fast as cold water. Correct me if I am wrong... but I think if you leave a bucket of boiling water and a bucket of tap water out in freezing temps they will both freeze at the same time????????

The way water works is, it takes a bunch of heat energy to melt ice. Then it takes just a little bit of heat energy to get the water from freezing to boiling. Then it takes a WHOLE BUNCH of heat energy to boil the water off into steam.

Hot water only takes slightly longer to freeze than cold, but it is by no means "every bit as fast."
