The real Vikings were those 8th to 12th century Norsemen from what is now Sweden, Norway and Denmark. They were raiders, traders, marauders. They cruised around in their long boats and attacked the Atlantic coastal areas of Europe.
They conquered and then settled much of England and what is now Normandy in northern France.
Some of them went as far as to go through the straights of Gibralter and into the Mediteranian Sea. Others made their way into what is now Russia. Rus was the name for for Swede.
Still others sailed the Atlantic and made Iceland and Greenland their homes.
The conguered peoples, especially in England were subject to a harsh but fair set of laws called the Danelaw and were forced to pay tribute called Danegeld (dane gold).
A couple of their greatest kings were Knute the
Great and Harold Bluetooth.
Some of the last of the pre
Christian Europeans, their main gods were Woden, Thor and Freya from which we get Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Excuse me if I don't get all the facts exactly right as I'm banging this out from memory.
I really don't care about a bunch of silly, modern teams and games. But I do like learning about the Vikings.

The only things stopping the Swedes from ruling the world again is the low population and small size of the country. They're so far ahead of the US in technology they make us look like we're living in the stoneage.

That and the fact they tax their citizens at about 70%!!! There's no money left to build the long boat to go raiding.

ultrawhiner-

Certainly not tractor related but I read it anyway. I will check Wikipedia later to see if you have your facts straight.

But-do you think that the group of people you tell us about would have been OK with the likes of Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson being called "Vikings?" Or were they a racially prejudiced crowd?

Was Knute the Great a cousin to Knute the Rockne?
Of course its easy for a Viking to look pretty fierce when going up against a few Packers and animals like Bears and Lions.Bet they wouldn't have been so good at taking over if they had of had to go up against Cowboys and Redskins.

Story has it a Vicking ship had sailed for weeks and weeks without seeing land. The men were in sad shape and poor disposition. In an effort to lift their spirits, the captain of the ship made an announcement. Men, I have good news. Today, everyone gets to change their underwear. The ship erupted with shouts of cheer and jubilation. Then he announced, Ole, you change with Sven....Sven, you change with Lars....

Naw, Tarkington came later, Joe Kapp was on all the signs in Viking Land sailing away. I remember seeing him on I35 ad signs when I visited my brother who lived in Bloomington and worked at ADM Atkinson Mill then. (1969 or 1970) I guess Dan Patch was their best horse...for stud service at least...The train was always whistling about him.

LOL.
I think though that squash came from the Americas and were not indigenous to Europe.
So about the only way the Vikings could have had them is if you believe the Kensington Rune Stone is real and maybe some of those poor, hagard Vinelanders brought a few seeds back with them.
Not that any self respecting Viking would...

So here's the deal. Why did we see a post protesting non tractor related threads only to find a post about flippin' Vikings?

I'm all for topics unrelated to specifically tractors, I just want to know why a regular whiner isn't whining about HIS OWN POST.

just a thought, but what would happen if tractor tales was on top and tractor talk was down where Tales is now ,maybe since it is a little harder to get at it would have more just tractor posts that some seem to want,I like both tractor talk and tractor tales,I just wonder if it would help, what do you think?

Naw...Some people would crawl through 5 miles of broken glass and flames just to talk smack on here. You could put this forum in the middle of the official ObamaCare bill that no one read before voting on, and some whining smuck would find it and try to convert people to his/her way of thinking.

Nice heritage you got.

These old time vikings were a bunch of no good for nothing murdering pschicopaths with not a grain of decency in their body.

Killing, raping and looting was their game.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find any group that doesn't meet the criteria you listed at some point in their history. Darn sure weren't many groups in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America that don't have that type of stuff in their background some place.

There was also an upmarket car made by Oldsmobile in the late 1920s called Viking. But to make this thread tractor-related, Bolinder-Munktell made some fine tractors back in the day in the former Viking land of Sweden.
