I got a email "flyer" from Costco a week or so ago...they have Westinghouse 7000W continuous/8500W starting generators on sale...anyone have any info on these...I'm sure its a Chinese engine, but the specs came from Westinghouse...anyone have any info??/ Bobinva

Not that particular item, but there's a lot of knock-off generators hitting the stores. Some have had fairly good success in intermittent service. Myself, I have two Briggs/Colemans. No complaints yet. I wish I had the $ to get a Honda or other top brand, but that's lotta bucks, and I don't need them that often. Guess the over riding question is how many hours do you really need one?

Honda knockoff but better than freezing pipes in the dark or
spoiling food in the heat.
I"d buy one in a minute if no gen set was on hand.
Use a proper transfer switch. The farmer fix back feed
through a clothes dryer or stove plug is bad enough. A good
swift kick in the backside for the fools that back feed 120/240
into a 240V welding receptacle.

Yeah, I hear that about freezing pipes...I've got a Miller Trailblazer welder/generator that puts out 8000W, that I have on a trailer with an air compressor, etc., but was looking for something that I can keep in the basement that the wife can actually start/run...ie., simple...and yes I'm having a transfer box put in as well (this is for a new house out in the boonies (compared to where I live now, anyway))...PS: I have ordered the unit...once here I'll let you folks know how it is... MAKE SURE YOU RUN IT OUT IN THE YARD CLEAR OF ALL BUILDINGS WHERE THE FUMES (CARBONMONOXIDE) CAN'T COME BACK TO BITE YOU. NOT IN THE BASEMENT OR GARAGE. (Yes, I'm SHOUTING!)

I have a 20 KW wired in with automatic transfer. Unit is a GENERAC and runs off LPG. Will just about run the entire house less the Electric heat. Really has been comforting to know that things are always going to be powered. The freezers, well, blower for lp heat ect. Do not loose power unless a large ice storm or something but works pretty good.

Do you REALLY believe there is any legacy/connection between the Chinese "Westinghouse" you are looking at and the company started by George Westinghouse?

I bought a Generac 5,000 kw with a Chinese engine at Lowes a few years ago. Haven't had any problems at all with it. Starts after 3-4 pulls and will run about 6 hrs. on a tank of gas (about 5 gal.). I start it every so often and let it run with a small load for about 15 -20 min. It is noisy.
