wished I'd had my camera

went rabbit hunting yesterday on state land yesterday near Smithville Mo. In this patch of timber is lots of old implements strewn around in thick briars including a thresher. Also seen an old two row planter with a good size tree growing in it. The trunk is getting big enough to lift the planter. One day that planter is going to be up in the air! Sadly there is also a plie of old oil filters resting in a gulley that feeds into the creek.

Sweetfeet would encourage you to go back with a nice camera to "document" the metal find. Unfortunately for the planters flight ambitions, trees (and most woody plants grow from the tips, not the stem. There will be no lift off. Jim

Not sure that the planter will get much higher.I was told the tree expands outward and adds to the top.Otherwise wouldnt wire fences tacked to the side of tree continue raisng as the tree grew.In my experiance the tree just grows around the wire. Bill

I disagree on the lift off theory. I have a friend that has a tree growing through a Snapper mower and the mower is about a foot off the ground now.

I thought that same thing, but theres a couple of trees in my old hardwood stand that clearly has wire marks in it and now you need a ladder to get to them, and I know its not from an old tree stand, I'll have to get a photo of this, its been there as long as I can remember, anything perfectly horizontal stands out in the woods, always man made or most of the time it is.

Might wedge up the planter, a little, and the ground around the root or bulge might erode, a little, but a nail or wire in the tree stays at the same height. Cells lengthen some, but not enough to make more than a 1 foot apparent lift.

You might want to 'Reach out' to a County Commissioner and give him a look-see at those oil filters. If you go there first, there would be less of a 'rub' with the AGDept and the Commissioners. This would definitely help our clean rivers. Just a thought from a fellow Missourian.

It's sad about the oil filters. People don't realize we didn't pollute this earth for thousands of years. We did it just the last 130 years.

I have trees on the place that had wire nailed to the 60-70 years ago and the wire is still at the same height.

Please look it up. The mower was on some other object when the tree encountered it. There were 40 trees in the neighbors woods none of them lifted any of the spike toothed drags, or ford sheet metal, or Rumleys they grew through. Jim

If it was around here and someone called the commisioners about the oil filters they would make them clean up everything they think its all junk. They don't look at farm machinery as collectables

Not true where I'm at. The Commissioners, all three are cattlemen and farmers. They collect cars, trucks and tractors. They all are trying to make a liv'n just like everybody else. They join the 4H, school board, MFA and got kids just like you and me.

They care about the County and they don't expect anybody to clean up something their not owning too. One of them I know puts in about 8-10 every day, some days more, for this county for less then 28K a year. He actually does something and cares about clean rivers and lakes here since canoing and floating is revenue in this part of the country.

Not all Commissioners is look'n for somebody else to do their work. The ones here have crews that actually work and will clean up messes like the OP talked about...or...they have connections with the department that will clean it up.

No reason in letting the water get filthy out of fear of hav'n to do something.
Your cows might wind up drink'n that oil, or worse--your kids. Years ago we didn't know that crap was a carcinagen...Now we do, so there is no excuse. Nada! 8)
