stuck in 4th gear

I have a tractor that has Economy Tractor printed on it. I got the engine to run. Then I went and got it stuck in 4th gear! Today, I noticed the old canope has Massey Ferguson printed on it. The tractor has a plate that reads All Gear Drive, serial #41389. I"m having a hard time getting anyone to want to fix it. I"ve crawled underneath it to look. I haven"t got a clue.

You probably pulled the shift lever past the shift gate. This is usually caused by wear in the gate and shifter itself, or... a little overzealous shifting. You will have to pull the top off of the trans, get all the gears in neutral and reinstall the top, making sure all the shift forks are in neutral and they go in the proper place on the sliding gears. If it is an Economy tractor, they used a Crosley car transmission. Parts are available on fleabay as are complete transmissions.

On some makes/models of tractors you can pull the
shift lever out (w/pin or snap ring) and with the
lever out you can take a Long screwdriver or bar
and line up the forks. Chuck

What you have is a 1977 Economy Power-King garden tractor. If its stuck in 4th gear the shift fork or rail is worn. The four speed trans was not built as good as the old 3 speed. On the four speed trans. the gears were spaced close and if they got a little wear one could strip the gears out real easy by getting it in two gears at the same time. I know for last year I completly rebuilt one and put in about $1,000.00 dollars worth of parts, not counting my labour. I buy a lot of my parts from Misson Sales in Princeton, Indiana; phone #812 385 5061;they always treat me good. Does your tractor have 16 or 24 inch rear tyres?

Can you see the whole transmission or is it covered with a sheet metal tunnel? If you can see the transmission it's a pretty easy fix. 4 bolts take the top off the transmission turn the top upside down and you will see to parallel shafts with U shaped pieces of metal sticking sticking up from them. Each shaft has a notch machined into it. Line up these notches with the rounded bottom of the shift lever between them. Then inside the transmission you can see where these 2 U shaped pieces of metal sit in the grooves by the gears. Move the gears to where the U shaped pieces will go into them when you put the top back on the trans. The picture has the transmission visible with no sheet metal covering it.
Actually if the transmission locked up you have a problem with the end of the shifter lever being worn It can be fixed by welding it up and then filing it to shape so it will work. More problems? If you shift it carefully you can use it til you have time to repair it. Email me.

I didn't bother to look up the year, if you have a 77 it probably has the sheet metal tunnel on it. your going to have to take the tunnel off to get at the transmission but what you find under the tunnel will look like the picture. On one of my tractors with the tunnel on it, it locked up in the winter when I needed it so I cut a section off the front of the tunnel to get the top off the transmission. Not to worry though, I did a very neat job and put the piece back on and it still looks good.

Allis Chalmers WD tractors have the same problem getting stuck in 2nd gear when things get worn. As someone else said just pull the trans cover, shift everything out of gear using a screwdriver as required and put it back together.

I am located in SE Georgia, The county of Brantley County which is one from Jacksonville, Florida. 45 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean at Bruswick, GA. And, east of Waycross, GA about 30 miles.

I'll have to measure the height of the tires. But they are taller than 16 or 24 inches for sure. I'm 6 foot tall, and the tires come well up past my waist. I'd say they might be at least 4 foot tall.

Thanks. Actually I thank everybody. But, yes, Dave, that looks like it! And, yes, it has a heavy cover over the shaft. BUT, you've inspired me! I'm going to get the cover off!
