Ford 7710 fwa

I have a 7710 fwa but the front end quit engaging. I have power to the solenoid and it has been taken out and checked. I pulled the plug on the front end and nothing was out of the ordinary there. What else can I check before hauling it to the shop? Its used every day.

Did you check both sides of the circuit? It is my understanding that some of them (like mine) are controlled on the ground side of the circuit

I'm not certain, but i think the solenoid controls the mfd being dis-engaged... it should be engaged by a spring... i think... that's the way my mfd works, (not a Ford though)...

If yours is the same then a bad spring or clutch disn could be the problem.

The solenoid disengages the clutch for the fwa. Spring pressure engages the clutch. Make sure you don't have current to the solenoid with the fwa turned on.

They're spring engaged and hydraulically released. If it won't pull... probably the clutch plates are worn out. What you might want to check is that the clutch pressures aren't already low and it's been half engaged while going down the road when it should be disengaged or that sort of thing... There's also a myriad of different transfer boxes and axles on those tractors depending on the build date. Any way you cut it, it's going to be expensive. You also want to be very carefull that you don't break any non perishable parts in the ZF boxes or you'll be getting stuff made.
