Guess what's on the lathe today in this pic!

First of all, I'm the farthest thing from a metal worker. I bought this lathe to learn on and to hopefully at least do a few small projects. BTW, if you have any info on this style lathe, throw it at me. It came with multiple chucks and all the gears and a couple other goodies. See if you can guess what's on here, it's going to be difficult I think. Maybe not for a couple guys on here that have the same "real job" as I do. Good luck!

Hint, white plastic. Was crooked a little and needed
"straightened". Had to do 4 others and even a new one right
out of the box so it would roll right on a bracket and not get
hung up. The new kit is a roller like this one and a mounting
bracket with the bearings, etc. Sold by Toro. That help?

Yep, striper roller on my Z mowers. Have to put those pretty stripes in many of the lawns we do. Bearings will freeze up or crud gets in there and rollers don't roll perfectly. Then they may wear into an oval or just be generally messed up. The old lathe took care of it though!

I have one like it with quick change gears and a milling attachment. I've made manifold studs for JD tractors and bored a connecting rod for a JD A. Turned a hydraulic pump shaft from a Farmall 300 and made speedy sleevs for it. Very good machine for it's size. I also have the origional book that came with the lathe. More than happy to help you if I can. rr

Ya, you need that with a toro. Never mind doing that, go buy an exmark lazer z, they have the best cut! No rollers on mine and they stripe the lawns fine! Snow would last in hell, before I'd throw money at something that stupid.

It is a Logan, Sears, Montgomery Ward or maybe some other brand names. Built by Logan. You can still get book for it from Logan. They are on line. I have one also!

I think Gravely uses a brush to do that. No bearings to mess with and no rollers. Seems like a good idea to me...

I have one Exmark diesel 72" with the steel fixed roller, it's a lot better. Really like that one, bought it used at an auction with a bagger and from the seat dump. Been with toro for 30 yrs, but may move towards Exmark. No good dealer here. I have to have some stripers, spec'd for several jobs. No striper, no job. One is a 20 acre hospital and next important is a 12 ac residence with twice weekly mowings. I like those.

You're right, that is simpler. This way sure is more in depth, i
don't like it all the time. I tried it before with a rubber flap,
sometimes in the exact wrong conditions (rain, whatever) it
would roll up some of the cut grass in what we called "cigars".
Maybe a brush wouldn't, hmmmm. I have to mow in all
conditions, and all i know is when the roller is working, it works
and looks great. And it's spec'd on multiple jobs of mine. I
(my guys) have to get about 175 acres/week mowed
regardless of hell or high water.

I had toro also, walkbehinds in the 90s than a toro z, it just would not cut real nice. So I went out on a limb and bought an exmark, it's 10 years old now but still cuts great, so in 05 I bought another 60" lazer z, 3rd kohler engine but mows great, best thing you did was get the diesel, I messed up so bad getting a gas engine! I never thought the mower itself would out last a engine, man was I wrong, those kohler command 27 hp are junk. So be glad you got the diesel, you get 6000 hrs vs 1400. Lol

I have that Exmark diesel and a toro 72" diesel but with that Briggs/daithatsu deal. See how long that lasts. Bet that kubota lasts twice as long. Everything else is gas though. Through religious maintenance I'll get 2000-2500 from an air cooled kohler, have 2-2500 on two kawasaki's currently, 2700 I think on one water cooled kaw and get this, more than 3500 on two fuel injected kohlers. I thought those would never last but they have. They need to probably leave soon though, been through hell and back. Still my favorite is a group of four or so old walkbehinds I have with the 12.5hp kaw. Several of these are late 80's, early 90's and have at least 8000 hours on them. They are in back up roles now, but can't get rid of them! Don't know how to work on them, never had to! I try to find old homeowner ones to buy because I will wear out those walk behind decks around the spindles at 5000 hours.

If I'm not mistaken, Exmark is owned by Toro. On greens mowers you can get wylie(sp) rollers. Instead of a solid roller the full width, they machined rings with spaces between them that don't allow the grass to stick to the rollers as much as solid rollers. Not sure if they would work in your application but since you have a lathe, maybe you could experiment?

Since you have the lathe you will realize, how did you got along without it. I have a South Bend myself, and use it all the time. I hung around the machine shop where I worked, and learned a lot from the machinists working there. Enjoy your lathe. Stan
