O/T Speaking of pecans

That depends on where your tree is in relation to other trees and structures.

If the tree is out in the open where the squirrel can not jump on a branch from a neighbor tree you can put a large piece of tin around the trunk to keep the squirrel from climbing the tree.
If the tree is next to other trees the only thing I have seen that works is a hunting cat to keep population down.

That may be true but I can only go on what I have seen.
I got a cat that will sit for a hour under a pecan tree waiting for a squirrel to make a mad dash for the other trees.
Now what it may be is I have the population in check and the cat is killing the young every spring.

A live trap may be your only option. The neighbor lady has two pecan trees and we're lucky I can shoot them. She wants them gone. I shot 12 last year and two this year. There's two more to get but I have a cast on my leg now. The season will be over before I'll be able to walk over there again. Darn!!

Would you shoot them if you could? Or would you have to contend with the "Oh, (honey/daddy) how could you?" factor?

If shooting is an option, get a high-powered air rifle. Set up a cardboard box or other covered shield with the open side facing your patio door. Place squirrel treats (pecans? peanuts?) in the box. Place recliner in front of open patio door. Load air rifle, open beer, turn on TV, settle in and wait for little Cheeky to come grab his nuts. Zap! When box fills with squirrels, haul box to the dump, or rescue mission, or someplace else.
