Scholarships

Hello my tractor friends. I am a senior in high school and am frantically applying for scholarships for college next year. I"m wondering if anyone knows of any tractor, equipment, manufacturer or any other scholarships. I am going to get a degree in diesel mechanics and business. So anything geared toward that would be awesome.

Thanks

For what you are wanting to go for check out UNOH (Univercity Of Northwest Ohio), when it first started it was NBC tech. here at Lima, Ohio, They have all those classes and are one of the top schools in the country in their field and also one of the most reasonably priced schools. They are now bigger than the Ohio state branch in Lima. And as I understand on classes they both have are cheaper than the state school.

My son and nephew both went there. My son graduated in 2001 if memory serves me right. My nephew started 2 years ago. Prices have doubled since my son went.

Do you have a particular school in mind? And or are you wanting to stay close to home? I had two academic scholarships when I went to school and they were specific to that college and specificaly for Agronomy.

Check with your local Deere dealer-Our local dealer sponsored my son at the deere tech. program at NEICC in Calmar IA.--Good luck!

Just checkout both CasiIH and JD home sites. They both were offering some type of program a couple of years ago.

For the diesel tech part of it, talk to any dealers you may be interested in working for. Most all the brands have sponsorship programs, where they help you with your school in exchange for X years of work.

On the manufacturing companys and their programs the engine part should be good but they will not have or want you to get the other part that you are wanting and that is business as if you got that they would not be able to control you and just keep you in the grease. If you got only the engine you would be tied to the company but if you get both the engine and then business then you could run your own shop and they do not want that. And any engine company would only want you to learn only their way of making engines and not be able to work on a competors engines. For all you are wanting a place like UNOH would give you more of a full rounded education than just an engine school. There are others like UNOH but that is the only one I know. What ever you do decide do not give up the business portion just for engine training.

The scholarship programs through Cat, Deere, etc are probably aimed more towards engineering studies rather than mechanic studies. Talk to some diesel mechanics. You might find your best option is to hire on with a dealer as they will sometimes send you to school on their dime in exchange for you agreeing to stay with the dealer for a certain period of time. Dealers will send you for training periodically so you keep up with technology. You can get a business degree attending classes at night.
IMO you'd be better off getting into the workforce with a good dealer and learning what you need to know rather than getting mired in college debt that could take many years to pay off. It's not uncommon for college grads to have $50K-$100K in college loan debt.
