"I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots".

In my opinion if he wasn't right he will be in the next few years.
Now days in our education system they no long teach reading writing and arithmetic. Instead they teach key board and game playing and sports. Many schools the sport are more important then the education the children get. As for college they teach common sense right out of people and many end up educated fools that know a lot about thing that will not help them much if they need real life skills

I actually got into an argument with my daughters teacher last year. My daughter spent 2-3 hours per night on homework 6 days a week and she was in 1st grade. I said she comes to school to do book work when she comes home that"s my turn to teach her life skills. She complimented us on her life skills saying she"s exceptional skilled however she needs all this book learning. Well after a big fight I won very little homework and her grades improved.

With no experience in childraising I speak from ignorance. Why in the ... world would a first grader have two or three hours of homework? You need a new school my friend. That one is past it's prime. Move on if possible at all costs.

My grand children all have home-work out the yazzoo. The best teacher I had in High School,a math teacher. Gave us no home-work. Everyone had to come up and work the problems on the black-board. After everyone got it he moved on. He showed us how we would use math in life. And things like a pint is a pound the world around. Not exactly right but close enough. Vic

My daughter had the same problem with my granddaughter. She told her teacher about the same thing you did and he did lighten the homework load up. Teacher tried to blame it on the no kid left behind thing.

I see the same problem here in NC with my daughters school. Their current project is to build a lighthouse. The "rubric" (WFT is that???- Oh, right, the boxed deal that tells how many points they get for this and that) calls for them to wire it with a 'serial' or parrallel circuit. Now what 4th grader is qualified, of needs to know how to do electrical wiring? Then they throw in things like the latest and greatest ways to do math problems. Thing is if the child doesn't understand the problems the parents can't help because they don't understand it themselves as that isn't the way they were taught.

In the end what I see is they are expecting the kids to grow up and be able to do things at an age of 5 to 10 that we didn't do until middle, or often high school level. Funny thing I saw an add yesterday where they were saying that a study had found that young kids having recess was a good thing, and actually helped with their learning ability as teaching them how to interact socially. It's sad that our current educators have somehoe turned their backs on, and somehow forgotten things that have worked for millenia. What idiots, and they are the ones teaching our kids..........

I'm older than dirt, so my opinions don't count with modern educators. Up through fourth grade we had to get special permission from teacher to take any book home, & then only one per day. Speaking of "book learning here", not life lessons, if a student didn't learn in class how to do something, he/she couldn't learn it at home.
Best teacher I had was for Biology in tenth grade. Some of his life lessons:
"Practice makes perfect" is not true. Correct practice, if repeated often enough, makes perfect.

This class is so busy going to school that they don't have time to learn anything.

Education is not the facts that you learn in school. It is knowing where & how to look up those facts, & applying them.

Those of us that had the best scores on finals never opened our books. Just paid attention & took part in class discussions. I admit that I did take about 10 pages of notes on facts that we had to look up.

It's too far the other direction in Houston schools. Little or no homework.

My Daughter teaches high school sophomores. Due to budget cuts they only have 1 book for every 2 students and they share. Books stay in the class room.

She gets 1 ream of paper for the year and a budget for copies that runs out half way through the year. The teachers end up having to pay the difference out of there own pockets or beg students to provide supplies.

Part of the problem is there is 1 administrator of some type per every teacher.

Another example of our dysfunctional government.

NCWayne, I know the projects you are talking about. My son is now in the 9th grade, so it wasn"t that far back.
I agree with the posters that said the kids NEED recess. Gives them a chance to unwind some of their natural energy. But, the teachers have so much wisdom they HAVE to impart to the young minds because of NO Child Left Behind, and others, that there isn"t enough time in the school day for that, much less play time.
My wife is in her 34th year teaching High School Sciences and sees the result of these Fed. programs every day. Idiots being passed along to keep from having 16 yr old 6th graders, etc. Also, you can"t send them home. The parents bring them back and DEMAND that you keep them for the entire school day. That is their babysitter, so they can make it to the Govt. offices to apply for more bene"s.
Sorry for the rant. But, I see it everywhere. Can"t make change cause they didn"t go to class. Can"t read simple English cause they didn"t pay attention. But they are out there and they will be voting for more FREEBEES to keep their tattooed selves in more of your tax $$$.
Just my $.02.

Are we raising a generation of non-capable boys in this country? I use the word capable because it closely describes the type of men I'm talking about. I consider myself to be a capable guy. I can do most anything, or perform most tasks I am asked of. Not an expert, but a general set of skills. I know a lot of the guys on this site are the type I'm talking about. Like me, you can do a lot of different things. It seems the generation growing up now have no interest in learning how to do things. They aren't interested in anything that requires actual work. I have no children of my own, but my wife has two. ages 29 and 30. One is a computer repair geek and can't even maintain a car. The other one lives at the farm, but has no interest in learning how to run the equipment of do any chores. I have told him he needs to come out when we are making hay and learn how to run the tractors and mowers, balers, etc. He will help out if asked, but won't volunteer. He likes to sit in the house and play video games and watch movies on his computer. As time goes by, we have less and less family interested in the farm. I don't know what will happen in the future when we get older and really need the help.

im afraid we are raising another generation of mostly useless idiots, there are always a few guys who "get it' and learn to do manly stuff, but when you see what i did a couple days ago you realize there are way too many useless kids around who we will ultimately end up supporting on the welfare program because they were too busy playing video games and making themselves look like freaks at a circus sideshow to learn a job skill, what i saw was a kid of his early 20's, dressed like a rag bag, talking on his cell phone by the side of the hiway, ,while a wrecker driver was changing flat tire on the kids car! [ apparently the kid didnt know how] now when i was that age i was driving a car that i had built, mostly by myself, and it was a decent ride, just not much hope here

A friend's teenage daughter cannot read cursive. Good way for parents to communicate without the child knowing what was said?

Technology is what it is. It's here to stay with more behind it. I don't, however, believe it is responsible for today's idiots. I think it is an education system that is constantly trying to take God out of school (going on right now in Ohio), and letting kids leave school without knowing a thing about the Constitution. It's not all the teacher's fault. There's also the news media who suggest 'Executive Order' does not mean 'gun seizure', and that it cannot nnalert the Constitution, while knowing this president has trumped it twice before. They want to keep us stupid.

"NO Child Left Behind" pretty much says it ALL..

Along with NO discipline permitted..what WILL they learn.??
Not much....

That, and MORE Un-Employment checks, allowing the Lazy to DO what they DO Best...

Ron.
