2001 Sierra cold knock followup--Tom NorthCenTX

It's been awhile again. Just over a year ago we discussed the knocking when the engine was cold. Tom suggested using Mobile One. It took until late July to need an oil change. I used Mobile One. I can now say that unfortunately for me it didn't solve the problem. Well, I appreciate the suggestion. I finally got around to letting you know my findings. I have learned I can minimize audible knock by running it up to 1500 rpms after starting it and holding it there for maybe 20 seconds before putting it in gear and heading out as I don't hear the knock unless it's under a bit of load.

Read up on 4.8/5.3L cold start piston slap. Many of those engines out there with half a million miles that have had that issue since day one and its never caused a problem.

I have an 07 Tundra that I bought new. It has had horrible cold weather knock since day one. The guys in the shop said that's normal and that engine will go half a million miles easy. I run synthetic 0W20 weight in it.

It doesn't help that today's vehicles are so quiet you hear every noise going on out there.

Justair, I have a 08 Sienna that has cold piston slap. Never talked to the dealer about it because I know what it is and it's off warranty so I just figured I'd run it till it blows up. Could be my fears are unjustified after reading this blog. I do know an aluminum block engine will let more noise out. I had an 84 Chevette that had an engine knock at any temp when I bought it with 48000 miles on the clock and it still had the same knock when I drove it to Grab-N-Go with 150000 miles on it. Jim

I have a 2000 silverado with the 5.3L. It has done the same thing from day one. It almost sounds like a diesel at startup. Truck runs terrific though. !47,xxx on the clock and never an issue.

I have a 2004 Serra with the 5.3. 186K and not a problem. Starts and runs quietly since new. It has been on a synthetic oil since new with changes at 7000 mile intervals..

2003 Chevy with the 4.8L, 183,000 miles.

I get piston slap right after startup. Sounds like an old diesel for the first mile or so first thing in the morning, then it quiets down.

Been doing it for at least 100,000 miles. Hasn't blown up yet.

You just have to get used to the noise and learn to ignore it.

Type in GM piston slap, I had a 2000 2500 with the 6L, noisy hot and cold almost from the start, traded it for a 01 2500 HD with 6 L, same problem. Took the o1 in and told them I had heard they were replacing noisy engines. Salesman said he dind"t know anything about it, printed off about a 1/4 in thick of pages about it, took it in, salesman called someone int the office, told me someone would be calling me to bring it in. Next day service dept. called, said to drop it off the night before so they could check it out. Called before I went to work and told me they ordered a new engine. Have 90,000 on the new engine and still quiet as new.
