What parts to replace when rebuilding front end of Ford F...

My previous post was about looking for tires. I
have decided to rebuild the front end while im at
it so hopefully I don't have any other issues for
the next 100k miles.... Here is my questions what
all would you guys replace. Its a 1999 f250 cab
and a half with 7.3 and 6 speed with 2 inch lift
and 33 inch tires... I was going to do upper and
lower ball joints, new shocks, sway bar bushings,
and tie rods.... Would you add anything else to be
swapped out? I want to do it all while I have it
apart..

maybe a-frame bushings and idler arm, dont know why it is but everyone says worn or loose idler arm is the biggest cause of loose steering in these old trucks.

It sure is hard to know if you are getting a quailty part anymore ! They all come from China and price is no longer a judge of quailty either.Prices are all over the place too even though they all come from overseas.

I have a 2000 F250, 7.3 6spd as well.

I assume you are talking 4x4. I'd leave anything solid alone...

Sway bar bushings and end links are "easy", although the "dog bone" on the end is one piece unless you get aftermarket bushing kit.

Shocks are "easy"

The rest, ball joints, the track bar and leaf bushes, tie rods etc should be check and replace as required, but I think if you are going through the effort to to ball joints, then everything else will be easy.

I'd also be looking at wheel bearings and u-joints.

good question to post on ford truck enthusiasts.

The bellows seal can be a pain!!! There is a driver made for it, I got one from Car Quest, about $125.00 makes it a bunch easier. I have done 2 now.

Iv got a 2000 7.3 4x4, I have put in 2 ball joints in 180,000 miles, thats all. I wouldn't replace any of the stock ford parts with anything but ford parts, I wouldn't use autozone, napa parts, ect

Make sure you use the Moog greaseable ball joints. Also look Long and Hard at the wheel bearings and u joints in the axle shaft if it's 4 x4.

Ford replacement ones are greasable also, but only the upper or lower I can't remember, I had one guy do a ball joint, he said it is such a hard job, I was gonna have another guy do the next one a few years later and he wanted to sell us ( my brothers truck needed one too) new u joints, we said no, he got pissy so my brother looked online and found out how to do the job, it took us 3 hours per truck right out in the driveway! The one guy had my truck over night? And it was $450 bucks, I got plowed, after I saw how easy the job was, I'll never pay for someone to do a ball joint again!

(quoted from post at 16:08:23 01/08/13) Only the parts you need to replace, New ones may not last as long as what you have.

Exactly right. Check for play in all components, replace the worn ones, leave the rest.

I'll second the suggestion for MOOG parts. They are visibly more stout than even OEM parts. After spending 6 hours of replacing upper ball joints, control arm bushings, idler arm and bracket (the moog bracket comes with a remote grease hose to make greasing easier), I dang sure didnt want to use the cheapo chinese junk. Rent or borrow a good ball joint press. The local places charge you for the tool then credit it back when you return it. Its a good deal, but check it for missing parts before you leave the store, I had to argue with the local store manager over some missing pieces that were gone when I opened the box at home

you can go to you tube and they have videos of how to change them on a 1999 F250. I'm getting ready to do my brakes so I'm gonna check my front end while I'm there

Yep, that's were my brother learned how to do it, you tube. It's more handy than than a manual! Lol

Use the best "MOOG" and don't look back....

I have installed some of the cheap chit,,, its a waist of my time... I installed a Driveworks (elchepo form advance) tie rod end,,, it blew apart when I greased it
