Cummins turbo's

Anyone know of a good place to get a replacement turbo for a 2005 cummins ISX engine? Mine is making some weird noises and I think it's time to replace.

Jon I do not know where you are located but we usually buy 2 or three a year for Blaylock Diesel Service
1 855 535 0208 They will take you credit card and ship the same day and have a competive price.

i dont know where you are located but rocky mountain Cummings can help, this is a chain of Cummings engine shops and thats all they do, they dont much care what the engine is in, if its a Cummings, they got it , it was expensive, but they just fixed a 330 pete of our companies that other "mechanics" in this area have been trying to fix for 5 years, the thing had several related electronic problems, not just 1, sometimes you just got to pay the price to have somebody look at it who knows something about it, a turbo should be no problem and it should be a good unit

Having run an 800 cu in 400 HP big cam Cummins turbo for awhile, before you plunk down $700 or so in today's money, ensure that the turbo is in fact the problem......BTDT and not only did I pay for the turbo, plus installation, I lost a days work having something fixed that wasn't broken.

The turbo is nothing but a shaft on bearings with a fan on either end inside a housing....with an external source of oil . About the only thing that can go wrong is to throw a blade or have a bearing wear out; both of which can be checked without removing the unit. You can eyeball both ends and check the blades and spin the shaft with your finger and check for shaft wobble or worn out bearing noises/friction/roughness in the rotation.

If the output "circuit", the high pressure air inlet to the engine intake manifold, has ANY cracks or openings of any kind, the pressurized air will blow out through the opening and whistle. The configuration and size of the opening determines just what kind of noise it makes.

Take something like a small feather or anything that can detect air flow and go over all the piping joints and the manifold gaskets and see if you can find a leak. Or you might wait till the engine is cool and with a bottle of soapy water and the engine idling, run over the joints with that.

On my experience, after the fact the whistle was still there and I found a small pin hole in the pipe that was the cause. I can't recall what arrangement I made with the repair facility owing to the fact that since the turbo wasn't the problem they should have removed it and put mine back.

I agree with Mark. A friend had trouble with his power stroke. The Ford dealer said it was the turbo. Well new turbo and no change. They messed around another day (buddy had to get a motel) and still wasn't right. He was talking to another guy at a café the next morning and a guy at another table said bring it over to my muffler shop. Took the cat. converter out and test drove it with a straight pipe, problem solved. New converter and all was well. Ford refused to make the unneeded repairs right. He's been driving GM for a few years now.

Mine is an ISX, so the turbo is $3495.00 from cummins, that's why I'm wondering about an aftermarket alternative. You can feel the bearings are out because the wheel hits the casting.

Just my experience, not sure if they're a Rocky Mountains branch, but Cummins in Rock Springs Wyoming, are the most arrogant, overpriced pricks I've ever dealt with.

One more comment. If you can get it apart and get the bearings out, usually the bearings part numbers are stamped on the side. Maybe go to the site of the bearing mfgr. and see if you can get one. Maybe a company like Timpken or other popular brand has a cross reference if it isn't one of theirs.

For that kind of money, my red neck instincts say to improvise.

Given the cost of a failed turbo that sends broken filings or chunks into the engine. I'll pay for a reliable repair.
