I'm sure you can find a local shop to build one to your specs. It won't be cheap but it will be well made.

Went through the same thing several years ago. Couldn't find a new one we liked that wasn't severely over-priced, and the used tables we found at auctions were in such condition to be not worth bringing home.

We scrounged up some salvaged 2x6, 2x8, and 2x4 lumber and built our own kitchen table.

If I was you look around in a local paper and try to buy a used kitchen table. I gave one away to a woman my wife worked with 10 years ago. I tried to sell the whole thing, good size table with 4 chairs. I was asking $400, but no takers. All wood chairs too the table was in good shape, didnt look new but who cares.

I had an opportunity one time to make reproduction oak tables for a large antique shop that sold nationwide. I knew it would turn into a big deal so I figured the price of the tables so the first run would essentially be making them at cost. I expected later I could find a way to cut costs to where I could eventually make a profit. I made my bid and it took the dealer all of two seconds to turn it down. He could get the tables packed in a box and delivered to his door from Taiwan cheaper than I could buy just the wood. It's no wonder jobs are in trouble in this country.

I agree that buying used American products is the way to go. Auctions, Craigslist, but buy American.

Even if it wasn't manufactured last week, it was made here and the money you spent on it stays here.

The Amish have went commercial. They have their furniture for sale in stores all over the country. Nice looking furniture. I hope this commercial making doesn't cheapen their product.

I bought my dining room set from a very good antique shop in Folsom, CA it's made of solid walnut. Table 5 chairs and a hutch. It will extend out to feed twelve.
Besides it beautiful. Paid $400 for it back in 1973.

In my opinion the best source for American made wood furniture is used pieces on Craigslist.

Good, hard wood furniture doesn't get any better then a 20,30, 40 year old piece from a estate sale
or older couple downsizing and moving south.

All the brand new stuff is junk unless you pay a fortune for it, and even then its not like the old stuff.

Buy used for fraction of price and refinish it.

Pete

One needs to be careful, even with Amish made items. It might be finished by Amish, it might be assembled by Amish but the parts may come from China.
