Cummins maintenance

Finally got a Cummins. Its a 99 loaded. I was wondering what oil (and brand) you guys run in your Cummins diesels, if you add any additives to your fuel, if you put in a lighter oil in the winter, etc.

Also I remember reading about a specific thing done to the transmissions to keep them going strong.

This is my first diesel truck, (all of our tractors are diesel) so I dont have a lot of experience with maintenance with these trucks. Any advice to keep them fresh and running smoothly is appreciated.

I have a gas truck but a '07 Cummins in my tractor. When I bought it new, I called Cummins in Ohio or wherever they are and asked this question: Sir, I have bla bla and want to run Rotella T 5w-40 pure synthetic in it. May I?

Reply: Sir your Cummins (4 cy 3.3 Liter) would love for you to run that oil (after the first oil which came in the engine).....need to get a little wear to seat things. Ok I ran it with no additives to the oil. Happy camper.

I would run either Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 or Shell Rotella T 15w-40 all year around in any Cummins truck. Also with either a Fleetguard filter (LF3972), Baldwin filter (BT7349), or a Napa filter (7620). Check those part numbers for sure, but I think they are correct.

I run rotella T synthetic in my 99" cummins, do you have a fuel pressure guage tapped into the injection pump? If not you need it, the VP44 injection pump is fuel cooled and lubricated, If the lift pump craps out your injection pump will die shortly there after. I run rotella 15-40 year round. Transmission thing you read about was to put a triple disk torque convertor in it and a stronger valve body. 47re is not able to handle all the torque of the cummins very well. Also invest in a fuel pressure gauge for in the cab. These trucks are notorious for the fuel lift pump to go out and evetually ruin your main injection pump.A full set of gauges for trans temp exhaust gas temp and boost not a bad idea if you do a lot of pulling or add an programmer or bigger injectors. Fuel pressure should be around 15psi at idle and no less than 10 driving down the road. These trucks have a lot of little quirks. Especially the autos. cumminsforum.com is a good place to get some info on these trucks. Some of its good some of its bologna. Fuel additives are a topic discussed alot it seems and depends who you talk to wether there worth it or not.. Some guys say its snake oil some guys swear by it. I dont swear by it but my truck seems to run better with it since the ultra low sulfur fuel came out. I love my cummins and hate the dodge. Feel free to ask me any questions Ill help the best I can.

02 Cummins in Dodge 2500. I ran Rotella 15w40 for a lot of miles but switched to Mobil Delvac 15w40 when I could buy it a lot cheaper. No problems with either. I run some 2 cycle oil in my fuel along with a JD fuel additive after a new injector pump at 80,000.

I am guessing from what I have read that I will go Rotella 15-40. And what was your ratio for the additive? I know for our fuel tank for the tractors we put a quart of additive for every 100 gallons.

I was planning on putting gauges on at some point. Probably wont be for a little while. I was going to put a boost gauge, transmission temp gauge and exhaust temp gauge.

And thanks for the info on fuel pressure at idle and while driving.

thanks I wrote them all down. Im guessing Ill go with the NAPA because I buy tractor filters there too.

If you run the engine for warm ups put the transfercase in nuteral and the in transmission nuteral or gear the oil pump don't pump oil to a bushing if you don't .

i use Rotella 15w40 with Lucas Oil Stabilizer and in the fuel i use Lucas Fuel treatment, marvel mystery oil, 2 cycle oil, and heet in the red bottle

Stay away from Fram oil filters. I recently went to the required Chrysler/Cummins training and the instructor told us that Fram has reimbursed Chrysler for 100's of engines replaced due to the filter media tearing and lodging in the #6 piston cooling jet. Fram never recalled any of the poor filters, just redesigned them. Same thing happened when the 6.7 came out. Fram paid for the engines and changed the filter again. There's no way to tell a good filter from a poor one and no way to know if all of the poor filters have been purged from inventory.

That's the VP44. Some run forever, some guys figure a new one by 100,000.
The electronics fry.

Some claim that their exhaust doesn't smell as bad with Delvac as it does with Rotella.
