Looking at a 500 gallon propane tank a guy has for sale.Wondering what it would take to lift it.
(it's empty)

I thought they were marked ?

To give an idea I lifted my 330 gal empty tank with a compact JD 4100 with the 410 loader and it did it but seemed like it was about maxed out.
So your for sure going to need something bigger then this.

My 7305 C.C. tractor will lift 1600 lbs. I bought two different 500 gal propane tanks. Could left one but not the other. 340 JD backhoe lifted the other one with no problem. I"m guessing 2000 lbs.

The tank will weight about 900 pounds and if full, the 400 gallons of propand will weight about 1680 pounds. 2580 total.

any tractor that will pick up a round bale of hay will move that tank empty, as it will be lighter.

Picked one up with my Massey industrial loader one time. It was all it wanted and the loader was strong on everything else.

Be sure to take into account the age of the hydro in what you pay for it.

I know they test smaller tanks on a schedule, but I have never had my 1000 gallon tanks hydro'd and everyone fills them fine. They were here in 1991 when I bought the farm. Maybe its the "Good Ol' Boy" system here?

About 1,200 lbs empty. I lifted and moved mine about 10 years ago, about 1/4 full using 4520 Deere with ease. First I tried using a 950 Deere, and it lifted it, but was a bit much for it. A 950 is about 25 HP and tips the scales at about 3,300 with a loader and is NOT the tractor to use to lift and move a 500 gallon propane tank 1/4 full. 4520 is about 100 HP, tips the scales at about 15,000 with a loader. Someone mentioned that if your tractor can lift and move a round bale, it will probably do the job. Good bet.

Good luck.

My son just moved two 500 gal tanks that were empty with his 4320 JD Compact. The specs say it will lift over 2000 lbs.

Maybe it's because they are not readily "portable".
