I found this picture of my grandfather and grandmother and some of my aunts in the late 30s. When grandpa lost the farm to taxes he bought a filling station and ran a truck out of Homer Nebraska.

Story goes....it was the gas station across the highway from the station grandpa and grandma owned. I dont have a pic of there station though.

You don't realize how poor we were untill you look at our pictures I have lots of the old family and we were far from being rich although mother did her best to that we had good clothes to go to school. The dresses and shirts were all made on her pedal sewing machine out of feed sacks. We were happy to get anything back then.

Thanks for the pic. A lot of farmers left that part of Nebraska in the dry thirties and ended up in either California or northern Iowa, as I understand. It was so dry for so long they couldn't pay their bills and they lost the farm. Some former close neighbors of mine came from Homer. We have a lot of other farmers in this area of NWIA who have ancestors that came from west of Homer to this area in the thirties. Jim

Where is the truck, I see a bumper a couple of fenders a little windshield and maybe a grain box. Three cute girls from years ago. And it looks like a truck driver and his wife.

Any chance he was related to "Two Gun Hart", who was Al Capone's cousin I believe and sheriff of Homer at the time of Capone's escapades? There is a nice little museum East of Homer a couple of miles on the bluff road. I have never been there but am planning on making a trip someday.

chevy, with those grill bars, im thinking 39 too not sure about 40, but my '38 chevy hot rod, had the headlights mounted to the sides of the nose, these look to be on top of the fender, i think they did that in '39,

Wish I would have seen this post earlier. Do you still live by Homer? I thought the log cabin still existed some where over there but I could be wrong. I live about an hour from Homer. My neighbor growing up was a retired Iowa State Patrol man and used to tell a few stories about two gun hart. Wish I could remember them now.
