What kind of wood is this? (picture)

I want to make an ammo bow for my son and want this appearance. I was thinking of using hickory. I found this picture online and like the "look" of it. What kind of wood is it?

The box in the picture is white pine. I think you like the end result better done in pine rather than hickory. Hickory is very heavy. It's what is commonly found at the lumber companies like Home Depot. The grade of wood is acutally SPF meaning spruce, pine, fir. The pine and douglas fir will stain pretty much alike but you may want to cull out the spruce boards. They will finish with a little different appearance. Spruce will be whiter in raw wood with smaller tighter knots.

When the box in the picture was finished someone went over it and scorched it in spots with a propane torch prior to staining and finishing. If you want the wood to stain more uniform so it doesn't show so much stripped grain, use a wood conditioner prior to staining it. Whatever you use its a good idea to practice on scraps with the finish before you put anything on your project.

It's called knotty pine used in cabinets and wall decorations
had a kitchen in my last house that was all in knotty pine. Very
pretty when finnished properly but very soft wood. Scrap the chair though.
