Been watching a Christmas story with my daughter for about the 100 time since it came out tring to figure era it is i kinda figure it is between the depression and WWII any thoughts?

I think it was right after the war. 1946 or 1947. Before TVs. My dad was born in 1940, his parents didnt get their first TV until 1950, it cost $600 and it was a round tube, 9" diameter or so and of course black and white.

Check out the Farmalls in the parade.
The Lionels: the Union Pacific looks pre war. The steamer might be post war.
What year was his Oldsmobile?
Clues?!?
Jean Shepard published the book in 1966.
I'm going to say 1940's

I wanted to get a leg lamp! The wife threatened to leave, I didn't get the lamp and she left anyway. Funny how these things work out.

I haven't done it lately, but several years ago you could buy one of those leg lamps. Google search for it. I threatened to buy one just to get a reaction from my wife, but she just laughed at the idea because deep down she knew I wouldn't.

Google search agrees with Jim. The Christmas parade features characters from "Wizard of Oz" (late 1939) and an Orphan Annie decoder ring (early 1940).

I watched my first TV outside of JCPenny's in 1947.
It was quite neat but us kids liked the radio programs better.

I doubt if I found one, it would not make it through the day, until a accident happened to it, which would have been blamed on the cat. Stan

I've got one. My daughter got it for me several years ago. It's smaller than the one in the movie though.

So did Ralphie, and I'm pretty sure that his mother made him eat a bar of soap for that too. Good boy, Ralphie.

its pretty much set in 1940, the date is on the decoder ring ralph has, and i doubt the Christmas of '41 would be festive like the movie is just after the Japanese bombing happened a few days before that christmas

It was pre-WWII; I remember those days. Remember the scenes with the electrical outlet? It was common in those days that each room in the house had one light fixture and one outlet. The outlets were often overloaded with cords.
