water in Christmas tree stand

The best guess is nothing but water. A supply of water four or five inches above the cut is desirable. Cutting 1/2inch off of the butt if it is a lot tree is a good idea.
if you cut it it would make no difference. Jim

we always added a couple of table spoons of sugar per quart of water... don't know if it actually helps though.

I've heard that a little hair tonic will work in the water, and a little "Touch of Grey" in the water will give the needles a slightly frosty look. Just kidding.

I would not know. I can't keep the water in long enough to see if it does any good. It seems like every cat and dog we have loves Pine flavored water. LOL They drink it dry several times each day. The one house dog will drag the presents out of her way so she can get to the water. The tree sets not four feet from a fancy automatic pet waterer that my wife bought last year because of this problem.

Same here, have two cats that drink the tree dry every time I fill it. Think they drink more water from the tree in the 3 weeks that its up then they drink most of the rest of the year.....

Make a butt cut on it just before you put it in water. Don't let the water level drop below the tree stump, or the sap will seal it off again. It'll drink a lot of water the first day in the house, so keep an eye on it.

Just for the heck of it I googled "Christmas Tree Preservative" and got many hits, Including surprise, surprise, if your water is hard add some acid, to help the tree to take up nutrients. I don't know what nutrients are going to be in my well water, or any municipal water supply.

Most places that sell trees sell a bottle of Tree Preservative it has wood fiber softeners, liquid plant food, chelated iron, manganese and zinc, natural oils of fir and pine trees. We got some, it was $1.00

I second that.

Trees seal themselves quickly. You have to cut the end off right before you set it up and fill it immdiately.

The sap starts flowing as soon as you cut it, and it'll seal right over.

And if you let the water get below the bottom of the tree just once, it's pretty much all over for the tree. Doesn't matter what you put in there because it won't be getting much into the tree from that point on.

If you do it right, the tree should hold together well enough. Depending of course on how early you get it before christmas, and how long it's sat in a lot before you bought it.

When you first set up your tree, recut the trunk, immediately put it in the stand and fill with HOT water.
Then....make sure the tree is not allowed to go dry.
That is the best you can do but you will never totally stop the needles from dropping.
