It's been a long time since I've seen that many oysters. I think back in the late 70's & the 80's we bought a gallon for $8.00. I think I still have one of of gallon cans. There was fish market in Baltimore, but I don't think its there now. I even liked them raw. Hal

Cant say I ever received Oysters, have gotten six packs of premium beer, however, I simply love practical,,,,,,,,inexpensive,,,,,,,,,or hand made gifts, they mean wayyyyyyy more then Wally World plastic objects....

We preach to the kids each year DO NOTTTTTTTTT SPEND MONEY ON US, main thing is to have them and grandkids home, were gettin older and dont need more "stuff"

I used to gather the family together with all lights off except the tree and play the Statler Brothers "The Greatest Christmas Present is something money cant buy" but when they come to the part about daddy turning 78 and wont be around for every Christmas Id break down and have to leave the room so I had to stop that tradition, made everyone sad and kids wondering whats wrong with grandpaw. Nowadays I just try to stay numb and sorta in a trance to get through it all

Check out the Statler Brothers version of "The greatest Christmas present is something money cant buy"

God Bless and Merry CHRISTmas

Considering the price that is a very nice gift but one I would not want to recieve. Just to many to eat in the short time span fresh.
And I do not really like oysters that have been frozen.

I do not care what the doctor says; I eat a few dozen raw every year.

Did my Christmas Shopping at the local cheese factory and the liquor store. 10lb blocks of mild, medium, old and extra old plus some smaller packs of 7yr old cheddar. Some Limburger too. 40 Creek Reserve for the drinkers
Probably should include a box of all bran breakfast cereal with each cheese gift?

Mom would make oyster stew as a Christmas eve tradition. It was a real delicacy when she grew up in the 1930's midwest. Done right it's very good. Dad made sure there we had pickled herring at Christmas too. I still enjoy smoked oysters and pickled herring every Christmas.

Wheres her store, down your way? Were heading down that way in a few weeks to meet up with some old friends who are coming through headed to Florida.

Can you imagine what a gallon can of oysters would cost today?

(Actually, I looked it up, and you don't want to know!)

When I was a kid, it was New Year's Eve tradition at a cousin of my father's.

We'd all go to church, then go to their house and have oyster stew and wait for midnight.

Hey John,
Crosby's Fish and Shrimp on Folly Rd. almost to Folly beach. Twin sisters own and operate it. My youngest brother married one and my first cousin married the other. Ask for Joni or Ellie.

When I was with Production Credit, had several customers who were oyster growers. Stopped at one, and lady said they had a gallon of extra smalls that were on the pull date, so she gave them to me, with instructions to put in smaller containers and freeze them.

I put them in the trunk, then forgot about them for a few days, until they "reminded" me in their own special way. Just about cried when I had to throw away a whole gallon of extra smalls (the size you get on the half shell).

Another family insisted I schedule several days in advance, and come at noon, so Grandma could make oyster stew.

Goose........yep, Oyster stew on New Years Eve. Old German tradition, "white-fish" first meal of new year for good luck. My Mom (Openlander) always served after midnite church services. Me? Slow cooker full of diced potatoes, 1/2-gal milk, 1/2-lb butter, 2-stalks celery, (sliced) and crock (quart) of OYSTERS 1/2-hr before serving. Top with lots of fresh ground BLACK pepper. Eat the oysters FIRST 'cuz they disintegrate over long time stewing. ........why am I HUNGRY???........slobberin' Dell

$68 if I remember what my dad told me the other night. An Aquaintance brought back 65 or 75 gallon back from down south for christmas. Notice I didn't say friend...LOL

It's been a Thanksgiving tradition for me to make oyster dressing. Dad loved it and we alwaays had Thanksgiving at his house until he died. I kept it up, but the best way for oysters is fried by my wife. Makin' me hungry thinkin' about it.

One year I stumbled on a sale on shrimp at a local grocery store. Bought a bunch and gave it as Christmas presents for everyone in the family. They loved it.

My wife said we bought some at $7.00 a gallon. Gas was probably less than a dollar a gallon back then. It started to rise in the early 1970's when they faked a shortage and oil tankers were anchored off shore. Hal

Oysters are one of those things that you either love or you can't stand no in between.
