Kinda O.T. Kohler KT17 engine

I took the garden tractor out last night to throw snow. It ran fine first and then seemed to run a little fast. Then it slowed down and ran fine. After about a half hour it seemed to lose power. I got out to unplug the thrower and the exhaust did not sound right. A little later it got worse. I drove it into the shop and the first thing I checked to see if the air filter had plugged. The filter was dry as was the rest of the engine. No snow under the hood. While it was running, it was filling the building with smoke. I think it was unburned fuel as well as oil smoke. It does use some oil normally.
Tonight I am going to check the plugs to see if one fouled out. Then I need to check if both plugs are getting spark. I will try to do a compression test if there is enough room to get to the head without removing the cooling shrouds.
I had started with fresh gas. I still had SAE 30 oil in it but it was in the shop at 45 to 50 degrees all day, so I didn't think that was an issue. There were no unusual mechanical noises. Any ideas beyond this?
Thanks, Roy

That's what mine did when it went down. It started misfiring on the right side and washed the rings out and the valve was burnt to boot. far less than 1000 hrs and that engine was shot. It did not have an oil filter or very good oiling system. Hopefully may be just your coil going out/shorting out from being wet. I had that happen too.

Tonight I moved it from the storage area to the shop area to check things out. It seemed to be running fine, so I went out and moved snow for an hour or more without a problem, until I got too close to the edge of the driveway and got stuck. Pulled it out with the pickup. I hope I don't have this issue again.
Thanks for the replies, Roy

Yes. The missing is usually dramatic on a 2cylinder with a stuck valve, but the unburned fuel or over heated exhaust system from direct burning could cause it. A piece of carbon stuck under the exhaust valve will also raise the same issue. Jim
