OT home school

I have 9 grand-children. Not one has ever spent a day in public school. Makes me grateful, when something like happened in Connecticut, happens. Another reason, the 2 that are old enough for college are carrying 17 to 18 semester hours one a sophomore , the other a Freshman. Full-fledged Universities, not community colleges.They have all "As" except The Freshman has one B in phycology.

I know where you are coming from. We kept both of our children in private schools to keep them away gangs and drugs. This was before all of the school shootings. When the private school closed we home schooled our daughter the last 5 years of her education.

The ones I have talk to and known have good education but no common sense and can count their friends on one hand.

Ones I have been around are smart, just have social issues! One has such a speech impediment that it will hold him back!

Home schooled kids are the best...or the worst.

Conscience parents force a well disciplined, positive learning environement. Some of the top SAT scores come out of it.

Totally undisciplined parents use it as an (often phony religious) excuse so no one has to get out of bed in the morning and the whole family can watch TV and play video games all day.

I have seen both in the area. first is fine although I think they miss a lot in social interaction.

Second should be against the law..terrible for the kids. No learning and no discipline for life.

My sister did that with her younger kids. Of the ones she home schooled becuase they took God out of the puiblic schools and were teaching things like evolution........most can't read well enough to get in college or trae school, niece had a baby taken from her at birth because she had meth in her blood. One has a wife who works but he's lazy. Does some preaching and figures God owes him aliving cause he's doing God's work. One's barred from several store for shop lifting......From what I've seen I'm not a fan of home schooling.

Like anything it all depends on the person teaching them. I have had a couple working for me in the haying they were at counting without a calculator. But ask them how old the earth is and you get 7 to 8 thousand years. Beats me where they come up with that.

Home schooled can be the worst. Depends on the parents. There is a punk kid that works in my department, he was supposed to graduate 1.5 years ago. Still no diploma, or GED. This kid smokes, drinks, smokes the funny stuff too, comes into work at all different times. He has potential but he is screwing it up. My boss and I are making plans to can his azz after the first of the year if nothing changes, which it likely wont.

I get a real laugh from all the people saying "They have no social skills" "They don't have any friends" Look around and tell me what social skills are coming out of our public schools? Friends? I can count the real friends I've had in all my years on one hand. I've had a lot of acquaintances, people I knew, but friends? As far as social skills, it's all those social skills and socialization that give us school shooters, rapists, abusers, bullies, thieves, etc. I'll have a 9 and 0 year old still int he school my wife teaches at. Once she can retire they come home for schooling- another year to go. Public schools gave me 2 older kids that are near worthless despite everything we did, I'll take my chances at home now.

We know several home schooled kids (and lots of STATE schooled kids also), its reported they:

Outscore STATE schooled kids hands down on aptitude tests

Everyone we have encountered are much more polite,,,,,,,better mannered,,,,,,,,more sociable,,,,,,,,more articualte,,,,,,,more knowledgeable then STATE schooled children,,,,,,,,,,more apt NOT to be from broken homes,,,,,,,,,attend church regularly,,,,,,,,,,very patriotioc and love God and Country and even like their parents lol..

Of course, they ate NOT indoctrinated and brain washed with elitist political correctness of the leftist STATE school system

THE WEIRDEST THING IS DESPITE THE ABOVE AND PUBLIC APTITUDE SCORES,,,,,CAN YOU BELIEVE IT,,,,,,,,THERE WAS SOME FLAMING abundant ON HERE A GOOD WHILE BACK WHO SAID IT CONSTITUTED "CHILD ABUSE" TO HOME SCHOOL KIDS GO FIGURE Thought they believed in free choice???? NOT where to send kids to school I guess???

Our two kids went to private school. One is now a PHD managing research projects and teaching at Harvard, The other got his degree from seminary and is managing a Lowes while working at getting a church to pastor. On the other hand we know of some kids who are being home schooled who we don't have a lot of hope for. The teacher has to be motivated and self disciplined.

Our daughter went to publc schools from 1960 til 1972 all here in MD. She went to work for the Federal Government for 3 years then decided to becme a nurse. She went to the local community college for 2 years and received an AA degree in nursing. She went to work at hospitals in Baltimore.

Several years later they were bugging her to get a BS in nursing and took a battery of tests at the University of MD in Baltimore and then took the senior year. When she completed that she decided to attend Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and get an MPH master's in health. They told her from the gitgo she wouldn't be able to work full time. She tried it, but had to quit and we helped her even buying her a car.

A few years later she went back to MD to get her BS in Nursing and after that she went back to MD
to become a Nurse Practitioner. She's still working and has her home paid off. She never married probably made a wise choice. Hal
PS: She was also a runner and I asked her why she never ran cross-country in high school and she said she need the time for her homework.

El Toro, you should be proud. But your kid didn't go to school in 2013. It's a lot different.
