Looking for an economical farm truck 98 ford Diesel???

I looked at a prospective farm truck a couple days ago. 98 Ford 350 dually single cab standard transmission. Body in good shape inside of the bed is dented up on the wheel wells. 300K miles so it will probably need an engine soon. The main problem I had with it was the brakes and clutch. You literally had to stand on the brakes to get it to stop (very stiff). The clutch wold not fully disengage. You had to grind it into gear but once in gear you could let out on the clutch and go. Any ideas on the brakes?? I am sure a new pressure plate and disc wold fix the clutch. What is the going rate to install an engine. Would I be better off overhauling the original engine?? He is asking $3500.00

Brakes sounds like frozen calipers. I haven't messed with disc brakes in about thirty years, but that's what it was on my '06. Someone stated on a recent thread how repairing brakes was not tough, just time. Total up needed work + motor, add to purchase price, compare to average book. Tells you if it will work or not.

I agree with the others, keep looking. To answer your questions, brakes sounds like the brake booster is bad, could be something simple or $1000 repair bill. On the clutch, first you need to check if it has a hydrulic clutch. Slave or master cyl will do the same as you describe. IF you have to replace clutch ,do not simply replace clutch or pressure plate. Replace both or you will be right back in it( been to that rodeo more than once). As for the engine, unless you know a good mechanic,or are one yourself, buying a crate engine from a reputable rebuilder is cheaper.. MY OWN experience with ford diesels is not good,in all honesty though the three i have owned have been older than this one so i probably am not qualified to say. If i personally were to start looking for a diesel truck today to use as a farm truck ,i would look for a dodge about the same year with a cummings diesel and never look back. in my experience they are the best out there bar none. weve had extremly good service from them. again just my opinions.

The high price, age, high milage and all those needed repairs would not make that truck very economical. There are better trucks out there for less money.

I agree with the others. Spend $5500 and you can find the same truck with around 100K with none of the issues.

Way back in the day I had a 65 F100. In the owners manual it listed a diesel engine. I never seen one or do i remember what the engine make was.

Sealed Power lists a 4&6 cyl Dagenham & Dorset available in 62 -66 Ford trucks. I never seen one either. I have read about the
Ford diesel derived from the 215-223 etc. being put in to early Ford pickup. Not a factory install as far as I know.

Bob,
Are you sure it is a 98 diesel? If I recall correctly, they did not offer a 98 diesel. They had the first powerstroke in 96-97 (no intercooler), then intro'ed the new body style 99 superduty with the intercooled powerstroke in mid 98 calling it a 99.

Is this truck the older style body or the newer one?

300k on a diesel is just good broke in. It should be good for another 100K or double that if properly cared for (proper coolant SCA additive to prevent cavitation failure, for instance). Check the coolant for spots of oil floating...

Have a diesel tech look it over. If the engine is good, the brakes and clutch are straightforward.

They made lots of them but they were all called 99's first year of the new body style. 99's made in 98 if diesel have the little diesel badge on the front fender after that they put them on the doors.

I have the 1966 Ford trucks shop manual and there are no diesel engine options listed for pickups that I recall.
In the newer trucks I have heard a lot of good feedback on the 7.3 (IH) diesel .

I owned a 96 ford diesel 250 so I know they were made 8)

It was a turbo Direct Injected Powerstroke with no intercooler. In 94 and earlier they made IDI 7.3 diesels with no turbo. Dad had one in a 88 250 truck. Sometime in 94 I recall (but could be wrong) that they had a IDI with a ATS ford supplied aftermarket turbo. They had the DI Powerstroke in 95.

Hi
Round here guys say the best part of a dodge is the Cummins and they messed it up bolting it to that truck. I know all trucks have problems, the guys round here complain about the 5 speed tranny dropping 5th, the steering being terrible and drive shaft/ axle UJ's failing regular.
Never had one and wouldn't from what I hear from the guys that do.
I Bought a 99 ford diesel got 500,00kms and still runs good . local guy had one with 900.000 on it and was driven like they stole it never touched inside the motor. only reason they stopped using it was some guy crashed into it on a trip down south.
As others have said run from early 6 ltr diesel(03). and any that have not had updates to egr delete and head studs and have power chips fitted, from looking around this kills them pretty quick, they are a junk motor right out the box.
Regards Robert

we( family) really havnt had any problems with them. i dont really like the way they drive as well as some, but weve gotten good service from them. personally i like ford trucks, just havent had any luck at all with their diesels.

300 is just broke in for a Powerstroke. Brakes are probably the vacuum pump. A shop should be able to check the vacuum. Around $100 to fix and can be done at home. Clutch could be a couple of things. There is a plastic bushing that is known to wear and not let the clutch fully disengage. All things that can be fixed fairly cheaply. If the body is good, and it's a 4x4, I wouldn't run away just yet. And technically, it can't be a 98. They ended the old body style in 97 and started the Super Duty in 99.

No 1998 Ford F-350 diesel sold....

It's probably an "early 99" which were sold new early in 1998.

Truck design itself is sold with the 7.3 and ZF6. The 7.3 will last

Truck in question sounds like a potential money pit...but ask yourself, even with a new clutch and all new brakes...do you have a truck that will last you a few years?

Is the body, frame and interior solid?

7.3 is most desirable diesel engine in a Ford pickup, no DEF, no EGR, no this, no that. I'd say 300k miles has some life yet if it was looked after.

They don't offer a 6-speed anymore either.

If it's cheap AND solid, you can afford to put some money into it and have something reliable.
