Gas in a diesel.... Not OT

Fuel was getting low in my little 3000.
So I drove it up to the gas station to add some.
There are 4 hoses on the pump
Unleaded Regular ------- black handle
Unleaded Plus ------- black handle
Racing Gas -------- GREEN handle ($6.99/gal)
Winter blend diesel --- Yellow Handle

I grabbed the green handle and put about 1 1/2 gal of racing gas in it before I said DOH and slapped my forehead.
Then I filled it up the rest of the way with diesel.
Tank holds 12 gal.
Friend says to add a quart of MMO and forget about it.
What would you guys do?

That or a quart of ATF. Don't you hate it when there is no one else to blame.:)

I think u will be alright. I remember a guy I was riding with that accidentally filled the tank on his ford F250 diesel about half full of gas. Called his diesel mechanic friend, he said fill the rest of the tank with diesel and u will be fine. Other than running a little rough never caused any harm.

~12.5 % gasoline in a of fuel will not be a big deal. You"ll lower the cetane number and it may be a little harder to start.
If it were my tractor I would run it as usual and keep adding diesel to reduce the concentration of gas as quickly as posible. Some of the old diesels used to recommend using 10% gas for cold weather operation( below ~5°F) to prevent gelling problems.

I'd keep diluting it as you can, not use the thing for record plowing marathons, not expect top hp/ torq out of it..... Give it an easier pull for the next 3 hours of running....

And should be ok.

LOL
Yes and I don't see you volunteering either.
Thanks to all.

The owner's manual in many American diesel cars and trucks states gasoline is OK to use in a pinch within limits.

Lady came by work years ago in a VW diesel and stopped. Said her car sounded funny. Got to checking and realized she had put gas in at the station. told her she should probably have it drained and put diesel in it. She just got back in and hit the road again.

DON'T use Mrs. Red's chili in the mix. Methane level is excellent but the lumps will clog the filters. :)

Just remembered. Ran out of gas in my Dad's 64 Chevy truck with six cylinder engine about 1966. Walked to the house and found a glass gallon jug and walked back and poured it in. Cranked it up and got home. Daddy asked a day or so later what happened to his jug of DDT and kerosene he had mixed up to spray.
Truck ran at least another 20 years. Probably had less mosquitoes around for quite a while.

I've seen people add 1 gallon of diesel to 15 gallons of gas, or 1 gallon of gas to 15 gallons of diesel before... Not quite sure why. A few people around here even swear by doing it once in a great while.

I knew a person in the 70's who had a VW diesel and they said that in the winter if it started having fuel proBlems the owner's manual said to add 1 gallon of gas to 10 gallons of diesel.

ATF is not good for the injector pump or injectors.

Dump a quart of 2-stroke in it and run it.

Now there's one I'd like to see...I call BS on this one

I've got two GM owner's manuals sitting right here. 1978 1/2 ton Chevy truck with the Olds 350 diesel and a 1981 Chevy Chevette 1.8 diesel. Both say that if low on fuel and no diesel stations are available, up to a 10% mix of gas to diesel can be used without damage in an emergency.

My 1982, 1986, and 1988 GM owner's manuals no longer say gas is OK. In fact there must have been a problem since the have a big notice in bold type. Reads "Do not try to use heating oil or gasoline in your diesel engine. Either heating oil or gasoline may cause engine damage."

Are you accusing me of BS? Are you claiming GM did not put this info in the manuals?

Yes my older VW diesel Rabbit manual says that but my 1991 Jetta diesel manual does not mention it anymore.

It's probably not going to hurt a great deal. Adding something like 10% cut was normal for severre winter operation once upon a time. I'd be inclined to dump a quart of 15/40 into it and forget about it.
