Guys i am restoring a work tractor this winter, and here is the issue. Buying parts from ads or if someone responds to a wanted ad. What i am saying is sending money to someone you don't know. I have several people i deal with and there is an established relationship (but they are a buisness) Buyer seller feedback discussion board is full of these issues. HOW DO YOU GUYS HANDLE IT???

I would personally purchase from a business.

I have had great luck buying parts from people from this site. Who in there right mind would stiff someone with this type of forum. You could only rip someone off once and then the theifs name would be mudd. I will take this chance to thank Tony from the East coast for the pulley for the 600. Power steering works great!

Most tractor parts sellers are honest. I have never been burnt, but then again I don't risk anything that I can not afford to lose.

I always use a Postal money order. I was told once that if you pay for something with a postal money order and they don't send you the part, when they cash it they have to answer to the federal goverment. I may be wrong but it won't be the first time.

I either buy it from an established business, in person, some smaller priced stuff in Ebay, or have it shipped COD and check the contents before you pay. My UPS guy will stand there for the minute it takes to check the stuff. I have resealed the box and paid the return freight if the parts where not what I was told.

I will not pay for parts before they are shipped from a private seller unless I have dealt with him in person a few times.

Unless you are restoring some real rare tractor or live in the middle of now where, you should be able to find parts easily through the ways I outline above.

It is kind of like these guys getting scammed on hauling tractors. Just pay for it when it is delivered. If the guy hauling it will not do that then he is not in business for real any way.

Also know what the value of the parts are. If it seems way too cheap then it is either a scam or the parts are not going to be as described.

I buy usually from the same local resourses. I have yet to get parts of Ebay, but Craigslist has been a reasonable place to get stuff, hence I pay the seller when he produces what I am buying.

We have purchased via ebay using PayPal.

Also purchased from an ad on this site. For that I paid the man using PayPal... you can pay anyone with it by entering their email address as long as both of you have a PayPal account. (That way none of your financial information gets passed along to a stranger.)

You can use PayPal for up to 2,000 worth of purchases without linking a bank account. BUT if you link an account - they better guarentee the safety from fraud. So we set up an account with only $30 dollars in it at a different bank in a different town. We never pay from that savings... just click on "change" and do the transaction using the credit card info we provided to PayPal. Then pay attention to your statements - both credit card and PayPal accounts.

I buy parts off of craigslist and other sites long distance all the time, I will not deal strictly e-mail, I want to talk to the person and make sure they are American and are familiar with the product they are selling. As a rule, Scammers won't talk to you on the phone and they can usually can be ferreted out because they can't answer simple questions related to their product.

Just about everyone has a Pay Pal account, so ask the seller if he will accept payment through Pay Pal, and then use your credit card. If the deal goes south and you never get the parts, not only will Pay Pal back you up, but you can also do a charge-back on your credit card.
