Remember years ago - grandpa's Oliver was broke down so my dad took our 9N with 2-12 over and grandpa's 860 with 2-14 and it took ALL DAY non-stop in one field.-

We planted about 20 acres of corn and soybeans, plowed it with Dad's Allis B and 1-14" plow. Seemeed like it took forever working after school, but really only about 1-1/2 weeks. Later on we got a JD H and a 1-16" plow, doubled our capacity.

Those old tractors did that for many years before real hp and speed came out. Just took longer, but the job got done.

Worked on an old Farmall some years back, for a local gentleman, when it started having transmission problems. His family had a huge farm in the area in years past but had sold much of it off to a local small town over the years for a school, park, etc, etc. He told me they bought the tractor new back in the 40's I believe it was, and until it came to me was still all origional. Thing even had all the origional leather seals everhwhere I had to tear into. Until they bought it they had been plowing one row at a time with a horse or a mule. Said with the tractor they thought they were in high cotton because they could now plow two rows at a time.

I recall stories of when my uncle took over grampas farm and expanded. He hired my dad, and a couple neighbors. 400 acres, 1/2 mile deep feilds, and they used a super H, a super C, and a 300 IH, to plow for a few years because those are the tractors that were on the farm to start. Then he went to "06"s and 6-18"s with a packer/leveler attached. Them boys spent ALOT of time in them tractors, plus milking cows.

Nice picture Larry.

When my older brother was in high school, he hired out to locals to plow with Dad's '37 or '39 BO JDeere. He got tired of having to quit when the sun went down and rigged up a set of headlights and generator off of an old Plymouth. Sometimes he plowed all night long. Ah - to have that much energy now. . .
