My '97 Dodge Caravan will not shift into high gear all the time. I pull over and shut it off for a few seconds and then restart, it will shift just fine. Sometimes it will go for days before doing it again. It only has 196'000 miles, I only had for the last 5000 miles, so I don't know the history of the van. Anybody have any ideas what is going on! Lately everything I own is going to the dogs!

turn key off, then right back on when going down road when this problem happens and see if it shifts. if you can do it safely of course. would tell you that you have computer/elec. problem. just a guess.

Several years ago my 93 did the same thing. Radio show mechanic said it was a ground problem, and they stay in second gear as a limp home mode. I ran a ground cable from the battery to a bolt on the transmission. Seemed to cure mine.

Had a plymouth acclaim, I think 97, that I got from my sister. Had 100,000 miles on it, but the trany wouldn't shift. It was the 3rd time for her since new. Worked in low and reverse, but no shifting. Thought I would just get a used trany and put in, but a machanic friend said he might be able to fix it. I took it to him, he looked at it for a sec, then said get in. He took off down the street about as fast as he could get it going in low gear, then through the shift into park, let it grind for a second then shifted back into drive. It immediatly shifted up and worked great. He said they had a problem with the governors that did the shifting. They were made to such close tolerances that anything could make them stick. The park pin was attached to that housing and the grinding from that would knock it loose. Had to do that a few times a year, but the car ran to over 300,000 miles. This was a non overdrive auto trany.

That transmission should have two magnetic sensors on it that you can take out from the outside of the trann. One at a time pull them out and remove any flakes of metal you find. Remove the -battery cable for 3 min and try it. If it does have metal flakes than check it again after about 500 miles.

How long has it been doing this? If it's an electrical problem which it sounds to me it will keep getting worse and not work at all sometime.

Must be a 1993 thing because mine did the same thing,a ground wire fixed it.Best vehicle I ever had, bought for $1,000 with 120000 miles in 2000 ran for 10 years adding 150000 more miles then sold for scrap for $275. No major work only maintance, engine still did not use any oil but the kids said they were ashamed to be seen in it anymore and the wife starting agreeing with them.
