I got a variety of guns but, I need a dog. My old Australian Shepard died. She wasn’t much of a watch dog, loved everybody but cats. I would like to get a dog that wouldn’t hurt anybody but, would act like he would. Anybody have a favorite breed for that purpose.

Pick one ...

My Chesapeake does just that for me. He is all bark and no bite. If someone actually came after myself or family physically, I think he would actually step in. He's 1 year old, 115 pounds. He come to my shop with me everyday. Most of the customers have come to be good friends with him but he still puts on a "show" whenever someone walks in. They just tell him to shut up and then he trys to love on them, kinda like he's sorry for barking at them.

Got a black lab that is as intimidating as any dog I've ever seen, and just as big of a wuss. Like another post I think he would really go after someone if they tried to harm any of us. Beyond that he has made a few feeble attempts to get at someone a few times, but that's usually when he's on his run, and after he does his best to get their attention ((((to give him attention))) and they ignore him. Personally I think he just gets mad at them and wants them to know it...LOL. The problem is he is so intimidating that most are afraid to get near him when all they need to do is to get close, tell him to 'shut up and sit down', and start scratching him behind the ears. Do that and you'll have a friend for life.

Pat, over the years I have come to be fond of a few breeds, none small. But you know what is the best breed of all? The one that you get from the pound, saving from the glue pot. They can be so loving and forever greatful. The same can be said of those that wander up hungry and either lost, dumped, beaten, shot at, or whatever. The best breed of all? The "scrapper" is my favorite, because when they are cleaned up and given their own bowl and soft bed, they are the absolute very best.

Good luck in your search and quest.

the best dog we ever owned was a female black lab/chesapeake. mom was lab, sire was chessie. loyal, loving guardian around adults and children. loved water and pickup trucks.

Australian shepards all the way!!! We have 4 they are pets and work dogs we also breed them. They won't hurt a fly unless you mess with their family then they will tear you apart. Where are you located? If close to me and you want another Aussie I can point you in the right direction.

I'm not sure you can depend on what a breed will do unless you get it from a serious breeder. Indescriment breeding puppy mills have ruined a large percentage of most breeds. My first preferance would be a dog that has been with it's mother from birth for 6 months or more and impressed current owner by showing caracteristics you are looking for. I aggree on a medium size in case he decides to wade in rather than continue barking. You may be out a doctor bill if he atacks the new UPS guy but that's better than having a Rot.x Pit cross tearing him in 3 pieces before you get to them.

Got to agree. An old room mate got what became my lab from someone who was wanting to get rid of him, and the wife bought our little Chihuahua. Too I had one mixed breed that had come up to an old employeer as a stray and hung around for years until the insurance company made them get rid of her. She was bound for the pound when I offered to take her. She was one of the best dogs I've ever had. Other than that every dog I have had either came to my house as a stray or was picked up on the side of the road somewhere, malnurished and in need of a good home.

We have 2 Australian Shepard mix dogs. An old female Shepard/blue healer and anew Shepard/chocolate lab mix. Both great dogs and watch dogs. The old female only bit one person, a guy who was dating one of my daughters and beating her. LOL I have no way of knowing how that dog knew, but that is the only person she has shown any anger towards in 14 years. I love to watch those 2 dogs herd our grandkids around the yard. The kids don't know what's going on, but from inside the house we can see. It's hilarious.

When I 1st moved into my 1st apartment, My roommate had a Chesapeake bay retriever. She was great and loved anyone that we accepted. When the people from across the hall would come over to use the phone, She would stand at the door and put her nose in their crotch and bark. Those rowdy kids became the most polite people you ever.

Dog don't need to intimadate anyone, just wake you up. We have 2 mutts with some terrior in them. Someone turns around at the end of our drive and we know it. By the time they can get to the house we are wide awake. Now if deer are munching on my hay they just stand at the door a growl.

Pat,

Here's just one man's opinion. I've had boxer dogs for 40 years. In my opinion, they are the ideal family dog. We've always let ours sleep inside at night. We bathe them regularly. Feed a measured amount of quality food. The kids and grandkids lie on them, examine their teeth, touch their tails, etc. I've never had one of my boxers snap at anyone, but have mercy, the fuss they create when a stranger comes on my property.

They're big and some people would say ugly. They are very initimidating to see, but are actually very friendly to anyone who should be around.

At least, that's been my experience.

Myself i have had husky shepards and one husky great dane mix and the one i have now Louie as we call him is a great dog , got him from the humane shelter as he was 9 mo. old and his owner was called to active duty , He sorta adopted me and i just took him home one day and figured that the old dog we had would not let him in the house . I was wrong they hit it off and the two were best of buddy's Bandit taught louie all the tricks . Louie is the second biggest dog and weighs in at 126 lbs . And you do not come thru the door unless i say , then your good but if not your ground beef. Rocky was the husky Dane mix , NOW that was a BIG dog and at 34 inches at his shoulder and weighed in at 157 lbs and when he stood on his back legs he would but his paws on my shoulders and LOOK DOWN and i stand six foot . He was super great with kids loved all our friends BUT if he did not know you you were NOT coming in the house . And at night if something went bump he was up and down the steps with a meanness i n his barking and growling and when he hit the door the house shook. Myself i will stick with the Husky Shepard mix.

I had a half breed Rottweiler he kept strangers at bay and grand kids could tie his tail in a knot. he was darn good cow dog too.

Ive had Boxers for 27 years.Everybody is terrified of them the way they bark and carry on,and the way they look, but they are big babies, except at night.Nothing wiggles without them knowing it.

Get yourself a St Bernard. Big freindly and lazy, they don't jump all over you, but bark at cars. The sheer size of them scares lots of people. That and it seems everyone has seen the movie Cujo.

Just watched a news report recently where the concept of 'dog owning for security' was tested. They actually did "simulated" break ins at random (volunteered) dog owner homes and the videos were showing that (something crazy like) %90 of the dogs were quiet, hid, or waged their tails, etc. when the stranger "broke in". A real eye opener that I never would have expected.

Too Far Gone,

I'm with you fella. My boxers have been a great delight and a great protection for all these years.

One evening about two boxers ago, the preacher and a deacon paid a visit to our house. I was working late, but my wife and two kids were home.

Cinders barked and carried on. She finally settled down and let the men in. She laid down on my wife's feet and gave the preacher the "evil-eye" all the time he was there.

We laughed with the preacher about that incident for years afterward.

I go along with the Great Pyrenees dogs. Shear size alone deters most people and the are fiercely loyal to the family and boy, when they bark at an intruder you will know it. Can hear them for a distance.

My Dad got one back in late 1950's and a deer hunter gave us a pup for hunting here in 1985.he was SUPER smart(like a human(Pat was his name) We saved a pup from him and named him Toby, then saved his son and called him PJ.All as smart as you'd ever want, and good hog dogs.Ol PJ got to stoved up in his hips to breed by the time I found a suitable female, then he died in the Fall of 2008.I fought for4 years trying to get something decent.I found that dipstick in the picture(Milo)is what one of my little girls called him and it stuck.THANK GOD,I found Milo on Craigslist at 7 mos old, barely trained, and unwanted by the second owner already. He has been just as good as my old dogs, excessively smart, lays right inside my sliding door if its cold all night on the rug.He is EXTREMELY protective of this farm, kills all varmits, great tug of war player with the kids, and if anyone different shows up he is extremely protective of me.He raises cain with them and has a low under-toned and constant growl while staring at them and standing with his paw on top of my foot, but he'd never hurt them.

My preferred breed has always been German shepherds. Very smart, loyal, and just about everyone (who doesn't know them) is afraid of them. Current one is about 80 lbs. (female) and great with the kids...but no one comes into the yard without her letting us know.

I preferred my English Mastiffs for protection.
Mastiffs are very protective of immediate family, but not aggressive. Which to me is exactly what you want. Had one or two salesmen (uninvited) think they would walk around them, dogs are a good judge of character.

English Mastiff, St. Bernard, Great Pyrenees, Bull Mastiff, etc all tend to intimidate just by their size alone. My dogs grew up with my kids, it is hard to describe how loyal and protective they were of my kids. I believe they would die defending my kids from harm. If it was the first time you were at my house, they would let you know how close was acceptable to be near my kids.

Only Mastiff I would caution you of is the Cane Corso, seems every week in the news they are killing their owner. Basically 150+lb killing machine.

Our renters have two litle dogs that act ferocious when their owners can see them. If I go over when nobody"s home the dogs are afraid of me.
