If you go down to "site comments" There is a poster complaining about us having too many OT posts on Tractor talk. I enjoy this forum just like it is. If I want to find out tractor stuff I go into the individual brand forums.

It kind of POs me that someone that comes to this forum rarely. An when he does it is for FREE information to repair his tractor then complains that the long time posters are not posting to suit him.

I have written his user name down and will make real sure I do not waste his "valuable" time by posting any replies to his questions.

Kind of like being invited to someone's house an then complaining that the house is not up to the visitor's standards.

I saw that too. Right before I posted about elm trees, I did think twice about posting about my elm trees, but I went ahead and posted, I like this site the way it is too! Ot posts don't bother me any!

I LOVE this website, esp. Tractor Talk and Tool Talk because there is such a wealth of information on it. I am not bothered by the "OFF TOPIC" items as I always seem to learn something from them. Also when someone has personal issues its always nice to know they have "family" there for them.
Guys, keep it up! Let the malcontents find another forum!!

I guess I don't get it either. I have been on here over ten years myself. I don't respond very much but I look at it two-three times a day. If I don't like the topic or don't care for the poster I just don't bother with it.
I have a little bit of everything when it comes to my farm tractors and equipment. I am not loyal to any brand so I too just go under the forum that best covers the thing I want to ask about. I just about always receive valuable information when I do ask. I also know I have learned allot about many non tractor things on the tractor talk forum also.

Saw that too. You know me,I post ten time as many OT's as I do anything else. That said, who hijacked my post about seed corn and what did they say to get THAT flushed? I just posted it yesterday,it was gone this morning. Somebody had to have gone a long ways to have made that topic political.

O/T don't bother me none. The way I look at is if you don't like what the topic is, don't read it and click on the next one.
If you are looking for specific answers or help on a certain thing, chances are you'll need to do a search in the archives anyway.

I see that the complainer has all of 38 posts; he must have helped many of us through the years with his ON-TOPIC posts. I've always wondered......and sometimes replied......why folks who don't like the way YT is run don't start their own site.

JD, 100% agree! In MHO If there wasn't the freedom allowed on this site to post what we want(within a reason) WHERE we want, alot of folks would have been gone long ago. The moderators have allowed this site to take the shape it has and for that we should be greatful.Tooltalk, Tractor talk ect, ect is good because the owners know they allow some VARIETY.
To bad the whiners spend more time writing complaints then it takes to simply click their mouse and MOVE ON.

Here, here I'm all for getting those ugly green things off the list they just clutter up the good stuff like Flambeau Red.

I can tell you this. Other parts web sites have forums, but some have the filters set so tight that it's hard to even answer a legitimate tractor question. I don't even bother with them any more. In fact,I just went to the Oliver forum on one of them to check for this post and the last question posted was on July 12 2012. So I guess I'm not the only one who doesn't bother with them.

I don't mind OT posts either; if the title doesn't interest me, I don't bother to open it!
This is my WD-45. That makes it on-topic. LOL
BTW, I have a lot of Elm trees on my property, all of which appear to have come from a big old mother Elm about 30" in dia. which must have real good genes.
I do lose one now and again and this one was about 14" when it died this summer. I did have one a few years ago that lost most of it's leaves one summer but lo and behold, it came back and appears to be real healthy now.
The elm in the background just over the right rear tire is one of quite a few real healthy ones I have.

If you click on the link below you can see ALL of the forums. It also shows the number of posts on each board.
Notice that TT has the greatest number of posts.
I'm thinking if people really didn't like all the OT posts here they would vote with their feet and the place would dry up.
I like this place as it is - kind of a community where all the colors come.
If I need info on a specific brand or model I will go to that board.
Simple.
all the boards

I'm going to leave mine standing into next spring, if they don't come back, I'll let them season on the stump, than cut them down and burn them!

Actually, this one apparently had begun to die the prior summer and most of the bark had fallen off. The upper half was well seasoned. I hauled it over to my son for his outdoor woodboiler.
I will occasionally burn some of the smaller well seasoned stuff myself and it is fairly good firewood. Not on a par with the Ironwood (Hop Hornbean) that I seem to have plenty of throughout my woods. Ironwood seems to just die of "natural causes" at any age from 2" to 12" in size.

OT's are what keep me interested in this site. It's like having a conversation with a friend. If I want to only talk about one thing, I'll go to the DR. or dentist or other people that specialize in talking about ONE thing. My friends are interested in many things. At a hunting camp, do you only talk about hunting??? Our varied interests keep if fun. This site is FUN!!

[b:a117c91231]"Kind of like being invited to someone's house an then complaining that the house is not up to the visitor's standards."[/b:a117c91231]

Actually it's more like being invited into someones home and ignoring their house rules.

[b:a117c91231]"Well said... it's free so what more do you want. And I like to see all the common answers."[/b:a117c91231]

Actually it's free for us to use, I suspect if we had to pay any portion of the cost Kim & company shell out, we'd all bail out in a heartbeat.

I'm even more curious as to how many of the posters on here even turn to this site when you need parts for your trailer queens, collectibles, or work puppies? Quite often I see posts asking where to buy parts, but seldom see a reference to the hosts business that graciously invites us into their home for a visit.

I don't see why somone would care if they don't want to read a post just simply don't click on it.
Not like there is a lmiit to the number of posts that can be made in a certain amount of time.I think complaining makes some people think they're revelant or important somehow.Dopey is more like it.

The variety keeps it interesting. It appears like minded or people with similar interests like to participate, engage in conversation, be it technical, casual or specific.

There is a certain "etiquette" asked of all who participate, which is politely stated by the moderator. The way I see it if a person can't abide by what is asked of you while participating, it shows weakness and lack of discipline, and please don't anyone be foolishly insulted by that statement, the point is clear, show a little control or discipline, things like politics, religion, always start trouble, sure things like that can be discussed in a civil manner, but some just can't resist the temptation and go over the line, same with whatever else may come up. We do have the option to skip over things, very easily, its comical that a person would waste their time to complain, but suggestions respectfully stated, with a reasonable point, are likely not to be ignored.

I can understand a person feeling that the label on the forum has this meaning or that, and should be narrowed to a congruent criteria to the title of the forum, however without the variety, maybe it becomes boring. I suppose you could try to steer the content a certain way, but maybe that becomes dysfunctional. This forum works fine as is, every one here may see some posts as clutter, but every person is different, so why not glide over those things, and pursue the posts that do interest you. Seems everyone loves photos here, almost regardless of subject matter.

Sometimes I see a bunch of posts that don't interest me, whether I partially read them or in whole or skip over them completely, does not instigate me to say well umm mr/mrs. moderator, "I" think it should be this way or that, who really cares, what difference does it make ??? For the brief time spent on the sight, don't most other things to do besides stare at their monitor and stew over the forum content ? Moderators do as they see fit to patrol, "their" site, I see no reason to disrespect that or worry about what is contained within this or any other forum, by a participant, who may take a harder stance on it and complain, waste of time.

You ask or initiate a conversation, you'll likely get friendly, polite responses, by those interested, polite "chatter" if you will.

Ask a technical question, people come out in droves to help or participate, opinions are given, advice stated etc. People like to use their intelligence here, great to see those of all kinds of backgrounds speak clearly about what they know, some may bicker a bit, but most show discipline and not get carried away, some do, you can't please everyone. Seems the darned thing works pretty good here and has for many years.

The thing I don't like is when a long time poster or someone familiar gets frustrated and you don't see them as often or at all, also seems its the same people that NEVER get involved with any of the politics, or engage threads that get deleted.

Enjoy the forum for what it is, skip over what does not interest you, and abide by the etiquette asked of you, pretty easy if you ask me ? Get upset over a forum .....LOL !!!!!

I enjoy the 'OT's,it keeps things lots more interesting! They keep things more 'human'.Keep em coming!!Kinda like Dave2,a little 'spice',he really adds to the 'flavor'!

If this site was tractors only it'd be so boring nobody woud use it and it would lay down and die. Somebody could ask a question about the battery polarity of his John Deere A but there would be nobody home to answer him. I consider this site an electronic coffee shop where people in every profession in the world can all sit around the table and help each other out. Jim

You should check out agriculture.com, it's run by a major farm magazine so you would expect big things of it. But there are only a few decent people and a small group of LEFT wing _holes who gang up on anyone they disagree with. It's pretty dead.

"Kind of like being invited to someone's house an then complaining that the house is not up to the visitor's standards."

Reminds me of some relatives.......

JD Well said... like what makes him king of the road all of a sudden.. have a good day. I for on like the OT get enough tractor talk everyday for 70 years.

JDSELLER, I come to this site on a daily basis but have the sense to understand that there are many people with more experience to offer, but many posts in this forum are helpful to any brand. But this is designed as a tractor website not facebook. I am curious how much money have you paid or made for your knowledge or lack there of.I was not making a complaint just a suggestion. Why is it that when someone posts something that does not seem to be gooey and PC it draws such a negative response. In truth with the title of JD in your name, with no disrespect intended I doubt we would ever have a situation in common other than this that would have us in the same forum for the same topic. I rarely post or respond because there are a great deal of very well informed visitors here who have more skill or experience to offer. I was not intending to be insulting or offensive to anyone but there is a forum designed on this site for O/T posts. I apologize to anyone who has been offended by my post, that was not my intention.

Thurlo How do you see how many post one has made.. I would be interested in seeing how many over the years I have made. Gets like you have never laid eyes on the guy but you feel like you know him because you have read his post for years.

If you look along the top bar this site is called 'All the Rest' and should be about tractors not listed along the top bar....Well if we have only Zetors and Belarus to talk about then I am off to another forum! I really enjoy this site and it gives me a great insight into how you people live and work in your country and I in turn like to show how things are sometimes different over in our wee country. Keep it as it is and I will stay!!!!
Sam

If you ever run in to this bunch at a show, make a wide circle in the other direction. lol

jm........on the small grey bar (under red bar) near top of page, click on 'options'; check box by 'show poster details'; click on 'submit changes'. This works on Classic; ain't got a clue about the Modern side....

MCOHIO: I am glad you chose to honor this post with one of your 41 posts in the year you have used this handle.

I have been posting regularly on here for almost 3 1/2 years. IF this was just a forum about old tractor repairs then there would not be over 672,000 posts on it. Most of us are kind of like a community on here and we like the way things are now.

There are many regular members that rarely post things about tractors. Some of them make this a great site. The best of these in my opinion is Larry@stinerscorner. HE posts pictures from his area of NJ and about his weekends in the country. I enjoy reading those much better than the five hundredth time on how to polarize your generator or etc.

Then in reference to your question: "I am curious how much money have you paid or made for your knowledge or lack there of." I made my living for many years as a mechanic, service manager, and own/run my own repair business in addition to farming. So I earned the knowledge on many tractor/farm equipment things. I try to help those that have troubles that I can talk them through. Look my replies up and you will see I help those I can.

My posts are usually about things that I think those interested in country life would like or find interesting. If they are OT then all you have to do is just not read them. You don't have to do anything just not click on them. That is about the simplest way to not do something I can think of. Just Don't click.

As for this site. I really appreciate the fact that Kim and Chris make it available for our use. I return the favor by buying parts from them. It must be working as advertising for them because the site is well maintained and seems to be growing. Their business seems to be doing well too. I talk to different people when I order parts so they have different people as staff.

Not to change the subject but I need to know where to tap into the hydraulics to install a frontend loader valve on a 444 international gas burner with powersteering.

As if it were worth taking the time, I'm convinced that if you kept score, you'd find the constant whiners only whine when you post something "ot" that they don't agree with. In the instances they agree, all is well with the world, and your off topic subject is OK to talk about.

If this site was to limit subject matter to exclusively tractor and/or implements, post totals would drop significantly. Some may say that to be a good thing. Myself? I'm all for knowing the thoughts and opinions of people from a variety of life styles and on a variety of subjects. Why ruin a good thing. If someone doesn't like this site, go eslewhere. Don't expect the world to conform to your every wish. I you don't like a certain subject, don't read the post. If you read and STILL don't like it, don't reply. And if you read, get angry, and reply to a post on a subject you don't think should have been posted in the first place, seek immediate help from a trained mental health professional. You got a problem. Not anyone elses fault.....

It's really about that simple.

I also agree with you JD, I would think most people that have a tractor, also have many "off topic"things in common, making hay, having cattle, chickens, horses, a barn, other equipment, burn wood, grow a garden, ect, ect, I don't read topics that don't intrest me, and how much can I post about my farmall H?? Maybe the post should be renamed tractor and farm life talk! Lol, it's nice to "network" if you like that term,,?with people from
All over the place, you learn how they do things, about there way of life, or how the weather is there, gas prices, ect, ect,,,That's what brings me back to this site everyday, just Ticked off, I can't post pics from my phone! Lol

The entire thread has been poofed. On the right side bar it does say this: "This is a record for the most posts in a thread in Site Comments". So, history has been made on this very day! (;>))

(reply to post at 09:20:10 12/09/12) [/quot

I have asked on here before and ask myself pretty much daily why do people put OT in the subject of a post???? So what???? this is a coffee shop not a board room with Roberts rules of order.

(quoted from post at 15:18:10 12/09/12) Not to change the subject but I need to know where to tap into the hydraulics to install a frontend loader valve on a 444 international gas burner with powersteering.

Dlong you are not lookin too bright here. You know that you cannot change the subject . So anyone else knows that you are not really looking for an answer.

I like all the post even though I am more of a spectator than a contributer but the post whining about the people whining about the ot post make me laugh

I read almost all posts, OT or not, way more intelligent and informative on this site than our local newspaper.

If you don't want to read the post, jeeze skip over it. Doesnt matter whether it is OT or tractor related to something you are not interested in.

Rick

jm.,

You are considered a Long Time User and joined on April 11, 2010 and have made 1,197 postings/replies according to Modern View.

If you are reading any post... just click on Modern View in upper right corner. When in modern view of posts/replies it shows below each user's handle the date they joined and how many posts they have made. Will also give a YT "handle" like: regular user, longtime user, tractor guru, etc., (which is either tied to length of time or number of postings - not sure which).

ALSO in Modern View there can be numerous pages to one post...but you can navigate through them at the bottom/right of page using the "Go to page, previous, 1, 2, 3, Next.

In Modern View you can see all that information about each poster - but cannot reply or post photos unless you log into Modern at the upper right corner...using your handle and your password.

To get out of modern view, just click Discussion Forums on the left of your screen - click on Tractor Talk or other forum and you will be back into Classic View.

JDSELLER, I have used this site for maybe ten years or more. I don't understand why you keep these attempts for insults though ie. "honor". I have also been able to fix most anything mechanical all of my life, I enjoy that. I have also purchased parts from this site, a parts search first lead me here. I simply made a suggestion to make the "TRACTOR TALES" forum closer in relation physically on this site to 'TRACTOR TALK". I did not condemn any O/T post or people or insult them. The descriptor for that forum states " An area for people who share an interest in old tractors to have casual conversation, tractor related or not." If any one has felt insulted by that, I can not help that. "TRACTOR TALK" states " A general discussion forum focusing on any theme related to tractors." Would not someone else post a similar suggestion if folks were posting IH FARMALL questions on another brands forum. All folks have a right to participate in a forum and I do skip the O/T posts. As I stated earlier I have found many tips, tricks, reviews and helpful knowledge. My tractor that I am currently restoring is almost 70 years old and some information needed for it is not available in manuals. I don't come here just for the free advice but when someone who has an answer to a similar problem and they have posted their help, I do appreciate the help they have given. If I have ever used your information you have posted then "THANK YOU" if I have not then "GOD BLESS".
