thinkin that the fuel line to the tank is rotted thru somewhere on the chassis rail ???,it blows thru to tank just fine ,.at times 318 motor is starvin for fuel, been keeping tank nearly full , that helps .. fuel filter blows thru clean as whistle ,. the 3rd port has resistance? ... suspected the fuel pump , so i piked one up , but waiting for better weather and health to install , BEEN THINKIN ....never heard of a fuel pump that worx some of the time ,, and then hafazz piddliy pumps ,, have any of you?

I had that problem with my '86 Dodge. I replaced the filter with a 2 port one and disconected the return line to tank. Right or wrong it helped.

It has been a while ago now, but had a neighbor (who has passed on now) that drove a old beat up Dodge (think his was bout a 88).. I recall once upon a time, his had a fuel problem.. If the tank was full it was ok, if it got much less than 3/4 tank, it would starve for fuel.. One of the lines on the pick-up (sending unit) had cracked.. if the fuel was above the crack it ran ok, but if it was below it wouldn't run as good. Almost sounds like you could have the same thing going on.

He also carefully cut out the bed floor to lift the sending unit as opposed to lifting the bed, or dropping the tank.. Not that the cutting of the bed did anything for resale.. The whole driver's side of it was wiped out when he bought it from another neighbor.. He always claimed he had over 400k on that old truck before he passed away.

96 Chevy was very hard to start,(I drove it for two years like that) when it finally quit, I replaced the pump and now it starts the first time over.
