This is our best American Elm. Hope it outlasts us - if it ever goes, my husbands shop and our outhouse will possibly get toasted.

We have two others that are the same age, but smaller because they are planted too close to each other. We also have three by our garden planted about 5-6 years ago.

Usually the trees don't lose their bark for a year or two after they die. Did it get hit by lightening?

I have one big Elm out in pasture. It's probably 3 foot across at the base, 50-60 foot tall. Theres another in my neighbors field directly down wind about the same size. I wonder if they are related and have a resistance?

Here in Ontario we have similar conditions. The odd elm gets as big as yours but they are sure the exception before the Dutch Elm kills them.My cousin worked in yhe greenhouses at the University of Guelph where the tried to breed resistant elms. Haven't talked to him in a few years but he said the early results were promising.

I didn't hear anyone mention that sponges love dead elms . I look for them they take me to the mushrooms.

Elm still grow around here too. They just get up so big and die off. Dutch Elm Disease. With the bark just starting to get bad it would be ready to cut and burn next winter. At least that's what I do, let them dry on the stump.

Dutch Elm Disease? We had HUNDREDS of Elm trees at home in WI. ALL of them died from Dutch Elm Disease.A real shame as some were beautiful huge trees.
