Daughter walked her horse down to see the new horse, and let them be together for a while. On the way back she decided to ride her horse with only the halter and a lead rop. The horse decides to take off running, Daughter could not stop him. She bailed off the horse, which was heading for a well traveled road. She also came close to landing on one of my tractors. The rest is history. Doctor said she may go to light duty in about a month, but will be four or more months before she climbes into a fire truck again. Stan

Sorry to hear that, I have worked with thoroughbred race horses, broodmares, stallions ect for 23 years, and I have never rode a horse, when I tell people I have horses they always say, "do you ride" I say no, they dont see why I don't ride horses, handling them can sometime be dangerous enough, let alone ride them. Hope for a speedy recovery for your daughter.

We get dumped on at the most unexpected times. I do hope she recovers with no permanent damage. I have great respect for anyone in her profession.

Stan, I tried to benchpress a TD9 about twenty years agoand it put me on light duty for a year. I still feel it every day because of the injuries I got. She should heal quickly, but sometimes the bruises can bug you for years. She's got a great job, and I have no doubt they'll help her along until she heals. She'll also get a good bit of kidding when she gets back, so her skin will 'thicken' some. Glad to hear she'll be OK.

Hope she makes a full recovery, she's darned lucky it was not worse.

What you describe her doing, would be regarded as highly foolish with the high strung thoroughbreds we deal with as retirees that find a new purpose in showing, hunters/jumpers.

I'm not sure if that is a common practice with other breeds or situations, and certainly no insult intended, but with no way to control, no bridle, no saddle, its just not a safe thing to do well at least with ones like these high strung ones. It reminds me of leading one by the halter, even in the barn its a bad move, which I have stopped people from doing in our barns at different times.

Regardless, hope she gets well soon.

Tell her not to get discouraged if healing takes longer than doctors are predicting.

My husband and son each broke some bones and it took a lot longer to get off the crutches than the doctors had initially said. (They both did what the doctor said to do, but still took a long time to heal.)

I hope she has a speedy recovery as well. We ride our horse in from the pasture all the time, with just a halter. Most of the time its fine, but if the other horses go blowing by on a dead run, it can get a bit exciting.
My Dad is paralyzed from a horseback accident. Happened 30 years ago, on a young horse I had started. Dad doesn't remember anything, other then the horse started to tense up.
Things can happen quick, whether horses, tractors, cars, or anything else.
My thoughts on horses are... at least 1 of us might use their brain. And it usually isn't me.

I hope she has a fast recovery with no lasting damage.

It was fortunate she had the presence of mind to bail out, even if she did get injured. Several years ago, a local gal was out for a ride on a dirt road. She approached a railroad crossing with a train also approaching. The horse panicked and tried to beat the train to the crossing. Instead of bailing out, the gal hung on and tried to stop the horse. The horse ran into the side of the train, and the gal and the horse were both killed.

Again, best wished for a speedy recovery.

Often wondered how the local Almish teenage girls clip, clop, clump bare back through town .on both drivers and work horses. Just a bridle, a set of reins and away they go to visit friends and family.

My grandfather would sell that horse the next day he would not have a horse that would not do what it was told or was dangerous to ride for us kids.
I have ridden all our horses with a rope around the nose with no trouble just a nice slow walk around that was enjoyed.
