The only occupation in america where you buy everything at retail and sell your processed goods at wholesale.

You are right except for being "the only occupation".

Most any occupation that takes from the earth and sells to make a profit is the same.

i.e. Fisherman, loggers, miners and so on.

Just saying.

Gary

While this is mostly true, one important thing you are not saying is: You are in the only business that allows you to sell all you can produce. I can not build and sell all the house I want. I can not do all the landscaping I want.
I have farm intrest too so not here to start a war

I don't know how you do it in America, but over here in the British
Isles the Farmer has to pay the haulage on every product that
comes on to his farm....And then he has to pay the haulage of every
thing that leaves the farm.
The fertiliser and feed trucks have all to be paid for...but the milk
tanker and hauling the cattle to market or grain to the miller has all
to be paid for by the farmer.....What other business works this way?
Sam

It's the same way here. At least if you are building houses or landscaping, the dealers would throw something in to get the business. There just isn't the competition in the Ag world anymore. There is only one fertilizer dealer in town and the next town would kill you in trucking charges to deliver the fertilizer or feed.

Yep, and the city folks ( Commissioners) look at that land and say:
"That Land isn't being used"...

I HATE when they say that...

Ron..

Our family has been in the farm machinery business, and farming for over a century.
Farmers are their own worst enimies. There have been many attempts to unite farmers into organizations such as the NFO, but as soon as a "better offer", or some one who would buy their product for a premium, while others were dumping their produce in defiance: they bailed and rendered the cause useless.
There are some local Co-ops here and elsware, that have been sucessful, in selling their produce at a premium, based on quanity and quality, and buying in bulk to get a reduced price on inputs. The old saying goes, "United we stand- Divided we fall"
Most farmers are Rebles (not an insult), but have never been able to unite in a common cause and follow through with their beliefs. The closest that farmers have come as a united group is the National Farm Bereau orginization.

'you can sell all you can produce'......I gather that you're joking or ain't got a clue. My father-in-law was a small farmer; never did anything but. He grew some cotton, but was mostly a truck-farmer......tomatoes and sweet potatoes; many-a-time, I've seen him bring loads of tomatoes back from the 'market' and dump 'em out.......before going back to the field to pick another load.

You're missing something. I've been sayimg that for years, but you're short. The proper phrase is, "Farming is the only occupation in America that buys retail, sells wholesale, and pays the freight in both directions".

No farmer wholesaleing around here,a lot of them are buying farms for cash off profits made the last few years.Dealers can't keep up with new
equipment orders.A local company that sells grain bins is 2 years behind in construction.

That's what I like about farming, the independent streak. If we all had to be the same and join together, might as well just take an assembly line job and punch out after 40 hours, no point in owning anything if I need to toe the line with others, can't be me.

No harm, and no shot at anyone else, just isn't that what farming is all about, being your own boss,?

Paul

"There have been many attempts to unite farmers into organizations such as the NFO"

I heard an old farmer say that getting farmers to unite would be like hauling bullfrogs in a wheelbarrow.

That land isn"t being used....Funny thing, our ancestors said the same thing about the Injuns. Bet they hated it when we said it too. LOL

(quoted from post at 16:59:24 12/03/12) And the Government makes up the difference with my taxes.

No, maybe for the big time ops, but not for the small guys. I don't get anything from gov't for my farm, but I pay my income taxes and land taxes and school taxes and sales taxes and all the other taxes. Oh yeah, and I pay a Self Employment tax!!!! What the heck is that about? Like I'm somehow benefiting in an immense way by working my farm? What tripe.

(quoted from post at 18:59:24 12/03/12) And the Government makes up the difference with my taxes.

Really? Why dont you look up my name "Wayne Flewelling in Osage county KS" and just see how much the govt has given me.....EVER!!!!!! Never got a red cent from anybody execpt for what I have earned through my own hard work........for all you peopel that think farmers are just soaking up govt money better just keep your mouth shut when it comes to most small operators........I hate how everbody that is living in the city think us farmers are on govt welfare...........UGHHHH

you people need to learn the omly new wealth out there comes from the land you farm it out or pump it or dig it all rest comes from the support of the first endevers

Farm Bureau, Blue cross Blue Shield ins. All Big Goverment
organizations, The poor NFO trying to get anywere, did not
work, even this very day, Farm Bureau, Fights Back in the
Midwest the small livestock producers are no more, goverment
finances,
support large, hog and cattle feeding operations in the name of
labor support to packing houses..... Organized Labor is
condemmed. Its a new world order.

You are right kent the first dollar made by any thing that is sold comes from mother earth. If it is an item you can touch. And even some you can't touch.

Example = computer, the items to make it came from the earth.

Cars, the metal came from earth to make them.

Everything!
