OT - Lost our friend

As many have posted here, our family dog died yesterday, and it wasn"t nice. She was 3 years old. Good watchdog, loved truck rides, etc. Well, we went away over Thanksgiving, when we got home, she was limping. Our son"s friend had been watching the place, keeping the gate shut so we knew she hadn"t got out. Figured something fell on her leg. Wife takes her to the vet 2 days later, seems a very infected paw is the culprit. Had to put her out to clean it up. Things seemed better (except the cost). Next day, she"s acting very funny, drooling bad, can"t eat, can"t hardly drink, we think apparently from the "operation" and pills. 2 days later, back to the vet. This time, another vet, a large animal person, realizes the dog has tetanus. Uh oh. This time a massive dose of penecillian is tried. Well, it didn"t work. Respiratory failure yesterday. The kids are upset, the vet bill isn"t small and now is not the time to lose our watch dog.

Wow, that's tough. You're never ready, but for it to come like that....

Guess I'd never thought about our critter friends getting tetanus.

They are Family Members, always and it is never easy to say good-bye to a Family Member...

Sorry to hear of your loss..

Of you have a FARM with animals..a Kuvasz is a wonderful breed...Loyal, Loving and will Defend any animal it is raised with...!!
Very smart..Great with kids..( especially, if they are raised around them)

Ron..

It never easy to lose a beloved pet, which is part of the family. Just remember the good times. As for the money, you did the best you could have done by taking the dog to the vet. If you had done nothing think how you would feel now. I have spent so much on vet bills over the years, but as I look back it was worth the money, to get the animal back to good health. Stan

Man that's a tough one. Sorry to hear it. Time for quick trip up to Dover. That's where Jakie came from.

sorry to hear of your loss, i know its hard to loose your friend but if its not too late i would suggest having the vet do an autopsy, before bringing another dog home you need to know just what happened to this one and if its something on your place you can remove it, if it was poisoned, you need to know that too, any chance the dog got into some antifreeze calcium chloride from a tractor tire or rat poison?

Sorry to hear of your loss, and you're right, not good timing.
Maybe you could turn some of that around with a Christmas puppy?

Sorry to hear that. You can never replace the dog you lost. Once it calms down, get another one.

I have said on the forum before, I swear the two dogs I have now are reincarnated from my old Mastiffs that are now gone.

Rick

So very sorry. She perished in your service , guarding your home in your abscence. She lives on in your heart. I'm sure she would have it no other way. It gets a little better with time. And you need a new friend and guard dog. It helps with the healing. Good Luck.

So sorry for your loss, we get so attached to them it causes us a lot of heartaches when they pass. I feel your pain.

Sorry about your dog. Shouldn"t have waited two days to see the doc. My cats even look at me crosseyed and within twenty minutes they are at the doctor. Don"t fret about the money, I have spent over thirty thousand dollars in the last several years keeping my little family of cats healthy. I don"t regret it one bit, they give me so much love in return.

I am so sorry to hear of your lose. I lost a 14 year old this spring, but just old age. It is tough to bear. Hang in there.

We had to put our Chow down in 2010 and she was 10. She had stomach cancer I still miss her and we bought another Chow pup once we got the bad news. Here's pictures of the pup she's now two. My advice is buy another pup. Hal

thanks all for the replies. Sad thing is, she was a replacement for our much older dog who passed on, faithful to the end. Now, we basically need to start all over again. Hard to have the heart to put into it sometimes. But, we will.

Sorry for your loss, by all means do get another dog when the time is right preferably from a shelter or rescue, you will change that dogs life forever.
