carnation milk

A little old lady from Wisconsin had worked in and around
her family dairy farms since she was old enough to walk,
with hours of hard work and little compensation.

When canned Carnation Milk became available in grocery
stores in the 1940s, she read an advertisement offering
$5,000 for the best slogan.

The producers wanted a rhyme beginning With
'Carnation Milk is best of all.'

She thought to herself, I know everything there is to know
about milk and dairy farms. I can do this! She sent in her
entry, and several weeks later, a black car pulled up in
front of her house.

A large man got out, knocked on her door and said,
"Ma'am,.....The president of Carnation milk absolutely
LOVED your entry.....So much, in fact, that we are here
to award you $1,000 even though we will not be able to
use it for our advertisements!"

He did, however, have one printed up to hang on his office
wall.
"Carnation milk is best of all, no teats to pull, no hay to haul, no $h1t to pitch, just poke a hole in the son of a -itch!

True story!

Carnation milk is the best in the land
here I stand with a can in my hand
no t ts to pull no sheet to pitch
just punch a hole in the son of a ditch

Heard that one when I was a teenager a loooooong time ago

That got me to thinking- do you know any of the history of what I think was a Borden farm, over on the east side of Earlville?
There's an old Beacon farm near here, as Beacon Feeds was headquartered in Cayuga.

Carnation Milk from Carnation Farm near Carnation. Washington, just 40 miles north of me, more or less. Growing up in North Dakota, I had always assumed the company was a Wisconsin company for some reason.

Sometime in the 1940's, my 6 year old female cousin recited that at a family gathering.

You can imagine the reaction, particularly from the rest of the mothers present.

'Course, my cousin had five older brothers who put her up to a lot of stuff.

I know where it is, matter of fact the fella I work for takes crops off of it. I think its been a long time since Elsie the cow had anything to do with it. I knew the fellow who owned it back in the fifties, he passed away and his daughter has it now. She has Angus on it and cuts and round bales a little hay to feed them. About 1/2 mile south of the main farm on the east side of the road is the old hop barns for drying hops. Still in pretty good shape.Used to be a Borden Condensory on the west side of Earlville.

I hauled milk in to the Carnation plant here in Sheridan. My uncle worked in the recieving room for 35 years. We shipped milk there til it closed. I always heard that jingle as "Carnation milk's the best in the land, just because it comes in a can. No teats to pull,no sh!t to pitch, just poke two holes in the sonovabitch".

I learned this version...

Carnation Milk, the best in the land
It comes in a red and white can
No teats to pull, no shitt to pitch
Just poke a hole in the sunnovabitch

There is one of the historical markers on the NE side of Norwich, NY. Says the marker commemorates the birth place of Gail Borden, founder of Borden company.
