MMMMM I love home-made apple butter! We make it in a roaster, like you see at church dinners. Do you use Red Hots in your recipe? They got to be hard to find, and a friend's wife who worked in the Kroger pharmacy told us that she could order them for us - through the pharmacy. . .

When we were younger, we had neighborhood apple butter cookin's. I'd help with the wood cutting and hauling, and sometimes the peeling which was started the evening before. We'd start the fire before daylight, and when I came home from work at dark, they were still stirring it. Then we'd can it up. Copper kettle. Silver dollars in the bottom to help it not stick. Wooden paddle, and lots of neighbors. Good fun. Most of them are gone now, and I'm the old timer. . .

Larry@stines,

Looks great!

The wooden spoon pic is a great illustration of how thick it should be. Never thought of cooking it down in a crock pot.

Whoa, Instant Flashback!

Haven't seen one of those sauce squeezers since I useta help my Mom make home made applesauce.

Looks yummy, Larry. Might even have to try a batch myself.

Another way to check for done - put a spoonful in a plate and let it sit for a minute or so. If any thin liquid shows around the edge of the apple butter, it ain't done cooking yet.

My daughter in law makes it in a crockpot. Grandpa always get a sample and haven"t had a bad batch yet.

Looks great, but isn't it late in the season to be doing this? Okay, not too late if the apples were still good.

Larry,
Were you making apple sauce and apple butter, I see you have the sauce squeezer?

When I amke apple butter, I dice the apples up and straight to the crock pot. Wondered if the additional step added something I might be missing.

Thanks,
Rick

Not with a root cellar full of apples that are going bad!

I got the recipe from Pickyourown. on the web,it said to make applesauce first, then put the apple sauce in the crockpot and spices for apple butter

We got a basket 1/2 bushel of seconds at the farmers market, they were secionds, but there wasnt much wrong with them, couple were bruised ,some were small or odd shaped. It wasnt just that the price was 7.00 dollars, but the fact that it was a blend of many different apples. We have found that a blend makes good pie, applesause,or butter,I really like using a blend of as many different apples possible

wish we did have a root cellar full, but we have a couple of trees, and never get many apples from them. I can not brag about my apple production,I have been a failure at it

my mom always called it a food mill. The one in the picture isnt hers,I got it at a garage sale somewhere
. If you look up Pickyour own,it has the recipe , I wish I could post a link for you ,but I am not smart enough on the computer, and my daughter is asleep, If she wakes up in a good mood,Ill get her to post a link to the site for you!

I love to hear stories like that,In Pa the neighbor family still gets together for the potato harvest, and when the sweetcorn patch ripens,When the corn is ripe, they all get together shucking, and a big pot of water is heated outside, and the corn is cut off the cob snd put in freezer bags, Its not the part of saving money ,its the part of getting together as a family that I think is the best! I have been fortunate enough to be involved in it,that is one of the reasons I like that area and brag about it so much!

Dont know yet,I tasted it hot,but there is some in a bowl in the fridge waiting to be tried as soon as I put toast in the toaster !

Thanks, good luck with the deer sausage, sounded like some good recipes, I put a piece of venison shoulder in the crockpot the other day with some taters, onions ,carrots ,and some dried brown gravty mix, nothing fancy, but it was good !

Without that step you are likely to not have completely smooth finnished product, may still have chunks of apple in it.

Are you fertilizing the trees two or three times a year? Do you start spraying before the first blossoms? Do you prune the tree in Feb? Give those trees a little TLC.
