Successful PA deer/ringneck hunting

Got in a good bit of ringneck hunting in over Thanksgiving break. It was a blast, my dog loved it. Then Monday was our opening day up here in PA. Dad shot his at 9 on Monday, I got mine yesterday at 215 in the afternoon. We both use a .270. Lots of meat on each deer. I am very happy that I got a buck. He is an 8 with a 14 inch spread. Heres a few pics. Also we had a tree fall with a stand in it. It just buried the stand in the ground. Gotta cut the tree up to get it out.

Nice - deer on the right. What happened to the one on the left? Let all the air outta him?

Birds seem a little scrawny, but still far better than here - no birds! Pheasant population is non existant. Think we need some guys to take up coyote huntin'.

We had skinned out dads buck. And we actually bought these birds and put them out for the dog to get. It helps sharpen his senses. We have a few wild ones around but they are few and far between so we get some. We use them for meat and training the dog. Its fun to hunt them. I just like to watch my dog work them. Thats the best part.

Wow, your tree stand just confirmed what I"ve been afraid of for years............that the tree I was in would blow over with me in it!! I"ve been in too many tree stands with the wind blowing rocking me back and forth. Aren't you glad you weren't in that thing?!!

Yes Sir! I had walked by it Thursday and it was up, went by sunday and it was down. So it happened sometime between there. We don't hunt that stand anymore anyway. The tree died last year and I was to afraid to climb up and take the stand down. I was more or less hoping it would fall and not hurt the stand.

We used to have abundant ringnecks here, fox, coyote and what have you made short work of them, I have not seen a one in 10 or so years. I saw one outsmart a large healthy red fox several times, he lasted a year or so around here, surprisingly, fox almost got him by the tail feathers once. I had heard the ringneck pheasant calls, went over to look, there was a fox sniffing around, could not see the pheasant and paid no attention to me at all, really strange, pheasant calmly snuck away and carefully got distance in the thicket, fox never figured it out, I stood right in front of the fox, eventually walked away, would have been an easy shot if I was armed.

The whitetail around here, in this immediate vicinity, never seem to get any older than what you have there, but we don't have the law on having at least 4 points and a certain spread, I kinda think we should. Younger seems to be better meat, seems what they browse and feed on helps a lot too. I've seen game cam shots in other areas more mountainous, much larger or older, I'm always like why can't we get those around here LOL, but the heck with it, we what have is fine and I'm thankful for whats provided regardless, sounds like a good hunt!

You had better luck than me. I saw a spiker Monday. Tuesday it snowed most of the day, but I like being in the woods while it is snowing. It seems so peaceful.
